A couple of months ago, PH previewed the Silverstone Auctions sale at last weekend's Silverstone Classic with a focus on the
924 Carrera GTR
; a very light and very rare Porsche, it promised to be one of the star lots. Having sold for £495,000, it arguably still is, but it has been rather outshone in the post-sale Twitter debates by a little old Peugeot.
But could you ever actually drive it?
Yes, the 205 GTI you see here has been the source of much discussion since the weekend. The reason? It sold for £30,938, more than £12K over its lower estimate and a world record auction price for a 205. As an extremely low mileage 1.9 (with just 7,986 miles) with one owner, it probably is one of the very best still around. But can a 205 really ever be worth £30,000? It does seem barmy, even in the world of a
£60K Escort RS Turbo
. Your thoughts, as always, are welcome. Could £30K one day be made to look acceptable for a 205 GTI?
Elsewhere, the auction was notable for a pair of E-Types that sold for significantly more than their estimates; a restored Series 1 4.2 FHC made £123,750, while an early Series 1 Roadster sold for £140,625. See also the Ferrari 348 TB (£115,850), Ford Sierra RS500 (£75,380) and an Alfa 4C, in right-hand drive with 2,000 miles, for less than £40,000. Interesting...
Silverstone's next sale is at Salon Prive in September, but before then we of course have the Monterey auctions to contend with. Expect some very big numbers there!
