Remember that rather spectacular
BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage
shown at Villa d'Este earlier in the year? As the moneyed and chino'd gather once again to admire multi-million dollar exotica at Pebble Beach BMW has given it a lick of paint, gifted it a token 'R' suffix and wheeled it out again.
There is some relevance to the Hommage making an appearance in California, this being BMW's 40th year in the States and also four decades since this car's inspiration made such an impression on American racing circuits. From the 12 Hours of Sebring to Laguna Seca just down the road from Pebble Beach, the CSL took numerous IMSA victories in 1975 and helped ignite an enduring passion for BMW M cars in the US market. As statements of intent go winning a championship in your debut year with 'Bavarian Motor Works' emblazoned across the sun visor is pretty emphatic and explains the inspiration for a new livery for the Hommage.
BMW seems to think this qualifies the Hommage's appearance at Pebble to be a 'world premiere' despite there seemingly being no substantial differences between this and the car shown earlier in the year at Villa d'Este. Feel free to read the press release in full if you've got the stamina and set us straight or just have a good old gawp at the pics. Because, attempts at trying to sound cool and cynical aside, the thing just looks fabulous and we'd love BMW to build it for real!
