For a man who didn't hold a driving licence until he was 24, Graham Hill had a phenomenally successful racing career. To this day he remains the only driver to win an F1 World Championship, the Indy 500 and Le Mans. Given current constraints on racing drivers, it seems likely that accolade will be kept for a while.
It's gonna need some work...
Anyway, as one of Lotus's most famous drivers, anything associated with Graham Hill still warrants attention. Especially when it's a road car used during his F1 career. This Elan Plus 2 was given to Graham Hill in 1970 "for his exclusive use during his associations with Team Lotus". RAH 400F left the factory silver; by the time it reached the current owner in 1976, it was yellow.
While the car was originally used for holidays and commuting, the Elan has been in storage for the past 37 years. Hence it's fairly, er, dilapidated state. The car is described as "requiring restoration" and isn't using its original engine. With a broken odometer, the mileage is said to be "approximately" 120,000.
You want provenance? You got it!
Feeling brave? This unique piece of Lotus history is being sold by Historics at Brooklands in its November sale. Interestingly it's being offered without reserve, though it's worth noting that Ronnie Peterson's Plus 2S sold for £72,800 earlier this year at the same auction house. You'll need to dig deep!
For more modest budgets, the Historics auction also features a gorgeous Ferrari 456 GT, an enticingly affordable Cerbera, a very well presented Mercedes C43 and, finally, a Bedford Rascal. Get registered now!
