For a car not designed with motorsport specifically in mind, the McLaren F1 notched up some impressive achievements. Of course there's the Le Mans victory, but the F1 GTR also won the BPR GT endurance championship in 1996.
To mark 20 years since the series win, McLaren is releasing a series of vids from that year. There's already been this one from Silverstone (well worth a watch) plus a quickie from Monza too (go on, it's only a minute) and now there's this from the Nurburgring round.
Despite only being a couple of minutes long, it isn't difficult to see why this period of sports car is so revered. There's the V12, for a start, but also seeing the drivers take on a manual gearbox is something that's so rare in the 21st century. Keep an eye out for Peter Kox's heel and toe in Diadora shoes... And the liveries are damn cool.
A modern GT3 car would probably be even faster, but as a spectacle the new cars would struggle to match these. Which is probably just what people were saying about the 70s when these GTRs were around. The march of progress, eh?
