Ferrari may have detuned the Enzo's engine for the 599 GTB, but the 5,999cc V12 still delivers 620hp at 7,600rpm and 448lb ft of torque at 5,600rpm. Driving through a six-speed gearbox with either automated clutch and paddle shifts or a standard six-speed manual, the 599 is good for 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a 205mph top speed.
You'll want to see that needle swing all the way
The 65-degree F140C V12 has a compression ratio of 11.2:1. Ferrari altered many of the ancillary components to make the 599's engine more compact and lighter than it was in the Enzo. This was to make it better on emissions and economy, which come in at 401g/km and a combined 15.7mpg, and also to make servicing the engine simpler.
A typical service will cost £1,500 at a Ferrari main dealer, while a full auxiliary belts service is needed every three years and is likely to increase the cost to £2,000 all-in. The engine uses timing chains rather than belts, so this helps reduce servicing costs and complexity, but scrupulous servicing is a necessity to maintaining the engine's health and the car's resale value.
If the engine is robust, the gearbox is tough too but check it engages gear smoothly and the changes are smooth. Any judder as the car pulls away from a standing start indicates clutch wear, which can be checked by a dealer using SD3 diagnostics. A new clutch is £5,000 fitted. Also, make sure the gearbox oil has been changed every two years or 37,000 miles to keep the 'box in rude health.
Many owners have opted to swap the standard exhaust for one that provides more noise from the V12 engine. Just be sure you can live with the noise and it doesn't drone when cruising on the motorway.
PHer's view:
"I love the car in general but it is a very expensive car to keep on the road with an average service cost of around £1,500 and the last time I took it in the car required £4,500 of warranty work."
