A little while back, PH previewed the sale of two
very special Ferraris
275 GTB/4
250 GT SWB
of Richard Colton. The cars were being auctioned at an H&H sale, with the money being donated the RNLI. Very generous.
The more affordable one at just over £2m...
Now the cars have sold for a staggering combined value of £9.5m. Predictably enough the bulk of that figure was taken by the 250, the hammer eventually falling at £7,550,400 and substantially exceeding the estimate of £5m. The 275 GTB/4 made £2,207,920, a car originally used by as Maranello Concessionaires' demonstrator and owned by Colton since the 70s. Let's hope the new owners use and enjoy the cars as they always have been.
In addition, the 70s icons previewed in our Under the Hammer column recently enjoyed mixed fortunes. The XJ12 C from The Avengers was estimated at £10-£12,000 but eventually sold for an astonishing £62,000. However the Ogle Aston sold hugely under estimate at £78,000. Both will need a lot of work on top of that original purchase price...
Other notable lots? A Ferrari 400i at £18,480 - affordable Ferraris do still exist! - a very imposing Mercedes 600 Saloon at £35K and a recently restored 390 GT Mustang, which sold for just under £40,000.
