Amazingly enough, a proper fast Cayman hasn't yet been confirmed by Porsche. So at the moment, these are just pictures of a Cayman with carbon ceramic brakes and a big wing. But it has to be
the GT4
, or the R, or whatever it will be, doesn't it?
Hurry up and confirm it Porsche!
There's been some discussion around the PH office that this Cayman could indeed be the car for those nonplussed by the
991 GT3
. Bear with us. The 911 is now quite a big car, it obviously doesn't have a manual option and it's arguably so fast that the track is the only place to properly exploit the performance. A really quick Cayman, providing there is a manual option, could be the answer to those concerns. Lighter, more agile, more accessible; it sounds a mighty combination.
The old 987 Cayman R was 54kg lighter and 10hp up on the contemporary S but this car looks an altogether more serious prospect. See the front splitter, that big old wing, those brakes and a pair of racy seats (without the GT3 RS child seat, you'll see).
Again we can only speculate on powertrain and again state the 400hp 3.8-litre engine from the 911 Carrera S would surely be perfect. There's even a much improved seven-speed manual from the 911 GTS that could be used also. Hopefully something will be made official soon and let's pray there's a manual option available somehow. We've been staring at these pics for ages finding no proof of either a stick or paddles.
Anyhow, with nothing announced the forum speculation can continue for a little longer. If the GT3 RS makes a Geneva debut then that would probably push this Cayman back to Frankfurt in September. When there is anything from Porsche we'll be sure to update the story.
