It's raining. Oh no, it's stopped. What's that? Feels like rain again. But now it's sunny. That's how the last hour or so has run at Le Mans, causing chaos for campers (oh, and for those racing of course).
Imagine how good these sound. Then double it
Having watched the start amongst thousands and thousands of spectators in sweltering heat, we returned to temporary PHHQ to watch at our campsite and through the PH NISMO live feed. Sat so close to the track is fantastic, at least before you have to sleep that is. With the surface moist the noise of flaring revs and zizzing tyres is carried across the campsite. I'm already in love with the Corvette, its brutal V8 roar and vicious pops on the overrun utterly captivating. The noise debate is one that will run and run; all I will say is it's a huge part of the motorsport experience for me and should remain that way.
It's been fascinating to watch the different attempts from the teams to win over fans. Porsche is predictably pushing its return hard, with slogans adorning the pits and plenty of freebies around. It seems every structure also features an #eatsleepRACErepeat from NISMO as well, with Toyota's publicity push fairly modest in comparison. That or I can't see them for hashtags. Audi is doing the quietly confident thing, some Transporters and A8s carrying a provocative #welcomechallenges but other than that just getting on with the job of racing.
And of course Audi are known to do rather well here. Perhaps not entering as favourites in 2014 but still a formidable force, it promises to be a great race with a pair of R18s running second and fourth as I write. A Toyota and Porsche are first and third respectively.
Our plan for later is to venture out into the woods when the sun has gone down and get a night experience of the Mulsanne. Let's hope it doesn't rain!
