Just how crazy can the prices for the most coveted air-cooled 911s actually get? Most of us thought things were already pretty out of hand. And then - clack -
on Wednesday night
the gavel fell on a price of £1,848,000 for a bright blue mid-90s 911 with a big wing on the back. OK, a pretty special one, given the RM Sotheby's catalogue entry reckons this 993 GT2 is one of 'about' 57 roadgoing examples ever built. But it's still 'just' a 90s 911, prompting an amusing piece
on Jalopnik
titled 'Air-cooled 911s are over, man'.
Whatever your feelings about such inflated prices there's no denying the GT2 is a pretty spectacular looking thing, THAT wing, those riveted on arch extensions and the intimidating combination of 430hp and just two driven wheels with no driver aids all adding to the mystique. And RM Sotheby's certainly knows how to promote its cars, the photos in the catalogue no doubt helping stoke the fires when it came to the bidding. Here's one of our favourites, prepared for your desktop delight.
