Mercedes-AMG has built plenty of cars to inspire the dreams of petrolheads the world over. From the original 'red pig' to the W124 E-Class based Hammer and the more recent Black Series range there have been some truly stand-out cars, not least from the more bespoke end of the range. Modern AMGs are now mainstream products and the pinnacle of their respective Mercedes model line-ups but this tradition - now embodied by the AMG Performance Studio - is where it all started. And this widebody 560SEC 6.0 is the absolute epitome of late 80s cool and a perfect example of an early AMG from before the days of Mercedes ownership.
Based on the original 560SEC model, this widebody version had a little more under the bonnet too, a 6.0-litre conversion using four-valve heads apparently giving the AMG 385hp. With the added power the looks needed to be beefed up substantially - AMG fitted wider front and rear bumpers, wider door panels and traditional AMG five-spoke deep dish wheels giving the car its nickname. This particular car is one of six examples exported to Japanese enthusiasts who were willing to pay - and wait - for AMG to build the car of their dreams.
In 25 years the car has covered 67,471 miles and is now up for sale in California. The price you ask? Unfortunately, this one is POA but a similar Japanese commissioned widebody sold at auction in Arizona for $154,000. So that should give you an idea of how much you need to find down the back of the sofa. You won't see many like it though.
