Nearly two years ago we pitched a Mercedes SLK55 AMG
against a Jaguar F-Type V6
in a £60K cabrio test at about the worst time of year for a £60K cabrio test. The Jaguar came out victorious thanks to its sharper handling, but the SLK was not disgraced and certainly deserves another look at around £30K.
Maybe not the prettiest, but think of the V8
The key to the 55's appeal is its engine, as is so often the AMG way. That 5.5-litre V8 is the same as seen in the E63 but without the pair of turbos; despite that, its 422hp and 398lb ft were easily enough to make the F-Type feel a bit weak. Furthermore, as turbos and engine fakery become ever more prevalent, to enjoy a large capacity V8 unsullied by either is a real treat. Alright, so the exhaust is occasionally a bit OTT, but such is the V8's performance and response that it's hard to be that worried. Tax shouldn't be too bad at 195g/km either...
While the F-Type won our comparison, the cars were only with us for a few days. Over a longer period, there's plenty about the Mercedes that would surely prove very appealing. That roof makes V8 roadster and refined coupe viable options, the interior is very high quality and the rarity of this car is something of a selling point too. Is the styling perhaps a sticking point for some?
Either way, it's a car that shouldn't be dismissed just on an 'SLK' badge or rather awkward looks. This SLK55 is one of the more affordable Mk3 cars at £31,995, the very cheapest now dipping under the magic £30K barrier. In black on fairly modest wheels, it's pretty discreet as modern AMG cars go. It has covered just 21,000 miles in three years and the service history is all from Benz dealers. Yes, it won't be as sharp to drive as a Boxster or have the all weather pace of a TT RS, but it does have a 5.5-litre V8. Maybe when they are all gone this AMG will get its 15 minutes of fame.
