Scamera makes £6,000 a day

A temporary speed camera site in Preston has been named one of the country's top earning Gatsos. The cameras snared more than 6,000 drivers and raked in £381,000 in fines.

Lancashire drivers ended up with 19,000 extra points on their licences in four months after the cameras were installed on the A583. The 30mph cameras are one of seven sites which have cost drivers over £2.7m in the past 12 months.

The four cameras which operated over a two-mile stretch of the road were installed in July last year while works were carried out. They had already run up almost £300,000 worth of fines and caught more than 4,000 drivers within 75 days.

In the first few days if being set up around 100 motorists a day were caught by the cameras and that brought in £6,000 of fines every 24 hours. The cameras were put into place while Lancashire County Council carried out maintenance work at Old Lea Hall Bridge and Lea Hall Bridge.
