In an interview with German magazine Welt am Sonntag, Macht reveals the extent of his ambitions: "If the world economy picks up again we can well imagine unit sales of 150,000 Porsche cars per year," he says. "But we won't achieve this with the four models that are existing today. Otherwise, we would have to significantly increase the number of cars of the current models. And then we would not be exclusive anymore. Therefore we have to think about new vehicles."
Macht also hinted strongly that platform sharing with the rest of the VW group would be a key method of Porsche's range expansion once it has been subsumed into the Volkswagen empire. "I am standing for integration instead of confrontation," he said.
This means that VW-based Porsches are a strong possibility in the near future, with a small SUV based on the Audi Q5 platform and a sub-Boxster roadster based on the VW Bluesport concept a couple of possible options.
Porsche's own platforms won't be forgotten, however: a coupe version of the Panamera - a spiritual successor to the Porsche 928 - has been rumoured for some time, while there has also been speculation that the Panamera's underpinnings could see service in other VW group products.
Macht also says that Porsche is hard at work on an electric vehicle programme, but that the project wouldn't bear fruit for some time: "I could imagine that we will drive the first vehicles in as soon as five to ten years."
A Porsche Q5 doesn't really float the PH team's boat, but a reborn 928 is an altogether more exciting prospect...
