My much loved Esprit is finally for sale. I bought this as a project in Jan 2004 and have done a huge amount of work to turn it in to a fast and dependable timeless supercar.

When purchased, the Esprit had been off the road for a while, undergoing an engine re-build. It was involved in a minor accident some years and declared Cat D. The owner had paid for repair to the front RH corner (no chassis damage at all) and had then started on an engine re-build that had been interrupted by a new member to the family and a home move that made additional work on the car impossible.

I gave up with the old engine and bought a replacement engine from a later SE turbo. I had the engine assessed and partially re-built by Ultimate Performance and then fitted a brand new induction system from Gary Kemp. Front and rear suspension also received attention. Gearbox was rebuilt. New ECU was fitted and chargecooler system was up rated with double volume CC rad and electric pump. New aluminium fuel tanks where commissioned and fitted, along with new fuel pump.

New steering rack and complete new clutch system also found their way onto the re-build.

The interior had been reconditioned with new cream leather before I bought the car, but I fitted new speakers and a superior Blaupunkt CD/MP3 player.

The car went back on the road in 2005 and has continued to receive upgrades ever since.

The imperfections with the car.
  • The body work accident repair wasn\'t the best. Look carefully and you can see that there has been a repair on the OS front corner.
  • There are a few scratches and scrapes in the paint. Nothing major. There is no lacquer peel and no micro-blistering. It looks good, but not perfect.
  • Door frames have slight corrosion, not terminal, but not perfect.
  • Aircon system has been removed to make way for enlarged charge cooler radiator
  • Heater does not function.

The list of things I have replaced (there will be loads more I have forgotten)
  • New induction system, everything from the turbo to the inlet valves.
  • Engine check, re-shim, new water pump and re-assembly by Ultimate Performance.
  • Every sensor in the engine management system
  • Fuel tanks replaced with custom made aluminium tanks

  • Front and rear wheel bearings

  • Every part of the clutch system from master cylinder all the way to the friction plate, every part in between.

  • Cam belt last replaced 2000 miles ago in 2007
  • New rear upright to replace cracked original item
  • New rad fans and surrounds
  • New steering rack (not re-con)
  • New front upper suspension joints
  • New steering rod ends
  • New fuel tank breather hoses
  • New carpet over mats (genuine Lotus)
  • New genuine Lotus Exhaust (S4 spec)
  • Custom made double capacity Aluminium Chargecooler radiator
  • Electric chargecooler pump
  • God knows what else

The car is really quick (standard spec was 0-60 in 4.7 seconds), and handles great, just as you would expect. There are no major issues and only cosmetic details need attending to, if you really do want to make it A1 (minor cosmetic imperfections never bothered me).

Stock engine developed 264bhp, the engine on this car will be running a little more, about 290 I estimate. This is down to the chip and chargecooler system mods.

It is a CAT D, so will never command the lofty prices of similarly spec\'d cars with no accident history, but the CAT D title in no way effects its performance or the pleasure that I have had from the car.

I simply find myself unable to use the car as much as I would like to these days due to work commitments (more time in the Far East than in the UK) and I need to find additional cash to fuel the family\'s passion for travel.

I am asking £7850, I don\'t think you will find a better car any where near this price.

I have owned this car for three years. Have not had many chances to take out in last year (less than 10 miles), so time for someone else to enjoy this true British sports car.
Comes with full service history handbook, had the big \'C\' service at Christopher Neil\'s 4500k ago Inc all belts, fluids etc and new clutch fitted (invoice for £1700.00) and interim service 350 miles ago oil, filter etc.
The car has covered approx 79,000 miles although the clock was changed in 2005 (at approx 74,000) due to damage. A new recon clock showing approx 29,000 was fitted, now showing 34,227. I have the invoice for the clock change and hope this makes sense.

Anyone that knows these cars will fully appreciate that cylinder head removal, valve clearance adjustment and exhaust manifold removal, amongst many other things, can be very tricky, time consuming and expensive. So many of these cars are left with blowing manifolds due to the complexity of replacement when they invariably will not come apart. This car has had money spent in the right areas and is in fine fettle.

Introduced in 1996, the GT3 was the last of the 4 cylinder turbo Esprits with a 2 litre 240bhp/216 lb/ft powerplant. It ran alongside it\'s bigger brother the V8, as one half of the two final model incarnations of the Esprit which had enjoyed many variants in it\'s line up since being introduced 20 years prior in 1976. The GT3 offered fine value against the V8 with a retail price of £39450 vs £59995 for the more powerful car, whilst still offering 160mph top speed potential and 0-60mph in comfortably under 5 secs. Contemporary road tests actually described the model as being the \'best Esprit ever\', not the fastest, most powerful, brash or expensive, but with all it\'s virtues considered perhaps closest to the Esprit\'s original ideals.

The powerplant was the familiar turbocharged \'slant\' four, now in 2.0 guise as opposed to the larger capacity 2.2 version seen previously in the S4, S4S and Sport 300. Developing 240 bhp with a torque figure of 216 lb/ft, and combined with a significant weight reduction, a contemporary road test recorded 0-60 in 4.8s, 0-100 in 12.5s and 0-120 in 18.2s, with a maximum speed of 159mph. These figures were extremely competitive given the model\'s \'lowly\' retail price of just under £40000.

From a styling point of view, the GT3 was a little more restrained than the earlier S4S with narrower 17" rims and a deleted rear aerofoil. To save weight, in standard form the model lost air-conditioning, air-bags, some sound deadening and even a hi-fi, and resultantly 330 lbs were shaved off of the kerb weight. It is worth noting though that air-bags, air-conditioning and a factory fitted hi-fi systemremained on the options list.

Other than the 240bhp 2.0 engine, more restrained aesthetics, and weight saving measures, the GT3 was essentially identical to the earlier S4S. This meant it had the zinc coated steel backbone chassis, composite body, double wishbone suspension, the same power assisted rack and pinion steering, and hugely effective Brembo brakes. The GT3 remained a very well engineered sports car, with it\'s chassis and performance dynamics placed above everything else.

This particular car is in arguably the nicest colour, deep Azure blue metallic with black leather trim and has contrasting Gunmetal Grey alloys, recently refurbished and in perfect unmarked condition. It looks totally superb, understated and immensely pretty. With 48000 miles covered it is a mid mileage car and is in fine fettle. Service history is excellent, complete and extensive, and the vehicle has just had a major cambelt service, it\'s valve clearances re-shimmed, and Mobil 1 Motorsport oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter replacement, in addition to other works detailed above. It is therefore, very properly prepared and presented, and in excellent mechanical order. We have all books/wallets/original sets of keys and the history file includes much documentation and old MOTs additionally to the original service book. Freshly MOT\'d, this car looks, drives, and goes very well. A GT3 feels so much lighter, lithe and nimble, than it\'s bigger V8 brother. User friendly, and untemperamental, the familiar Lotus twin cam note, combined with the turbo\'s unmistakable whistle, will always induce a huge grin as it wails up through the \'box. With true supercar looks, and genuinely junior supercar performance, it doesn\'t get more special for £15k.

This is a well known car with full Lotus main dealer/specialist history. The Sport350 is a 3.5l V8 twin turbo producing 350bhp and 295lbft of torque, originally priced at £64,950 before options.

Only 42 of this rare variant of the Esprit were produced and a good guess would say that there aren\'t many left, perhaps 25 worldwide? For sale, one for the Lotus aficionados and collectors, a 1980 Essex Turbo Esprit, the fourth customer car delivered and best of all it is commem0rative model 007, yes you too can pretend you are James Bond (we are all kids at heart right?).

The original and in my honest opinion the best Turbo Esprit ever made, this has for 30 years been my favourite Lotus of all time, closely followed by the original 1950\'s Elite.

The lotus Esprit Turbo was launched in February 1980 at London\'s Albert Hall in the commemorative colours of the Team Lotus sponsors Essex Petroleum. 100 cars were to be produced but the run ended after just 22 cars being built (letter provided from Lotus confirming), the first 3 production cars were retained by Lotus with 2 cars being supplied to the makers of the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" starring Roger Moore, one car was repainted white and was blown apart in the film (although this was probably a mock up of the car), the other car was painted bronze and appeared in the film with a ski rack and driven by Roger Moore.

The first production customer car was chassis 0899GT registration GBO 4W, which makes GBO 7W the fourth customer car and best of all is commemorative model 007 making it inextricably linked with the James Bond film.


The film car, registration OPW 678W, was recently sold at auction for £100,000.

I have priced this at what I consider a very reasonable £16,000, it is one of the most desirable models as it has the commemorative number 007 and extensive history, even basket cases will command £10,000 such is their rarity and desirability.

It is, however, 30 years old and as such not perfect, although having said that it would not take a great deal to make it concours, try and find a concours example for under £25,000, that is if you can find any for sale at all.

Still undoubtedly in classic A1 condition, but don\'t expect a new car, then again I have seen some 5 year old Lotuses in not as good condition as this.

I have just given it a service with new distributor cap, HT leads, plugs, oil and filters, the cambelt was changed less than 5,000 miles ago and the engine/gearbox rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago, so all is good to go. Even the air conditioning works and it is a pleasure to drive such a fast and iconic classic car, the attention it gets on the road has to be seen to be believed, recently MOT\'d the MOT guy was in awe of it and 2 of his customers offered to swap their new and expensive cars for it, it is such a rare sight to see any Esprit let alone a rare model such as this, it is even cheap to run as fully comprehensive classic car insurance costs me just £120.


My car, 007, has a huge amount of history, full dealer service history, bills for over £26,000 since 1989, £5,700 cost of Engine/Gearbox rebuild in March 2001, Turbo rebuilt in January 2008, minimal mileage since. I am only selling this as I have another Lotus, a racing Exige, which I have been unable to sell for anywhere near what it is worth, I can\'t keep both (actually I also have 2 Elan Plus 2s, Excel SE and a Jag Mk2 but that is another story) and I have very reluctantly agreed to sell the Essex which is something I know I will regret but needs must.

Virtually everything on the car has been renewed, engine, turbo, gearbox, brakes, suspension, cooling system, exhaust, best of all has to be the fully stamped Lotus dealer service history book, how many 30 year old cars can boast that.


With only 5 such examples being registered on UK roads these models rarely come up for sale and when they do they are often sold within a couple of days if not hours, so I don\'t expect it to hang around long, so I urge you to be quick in viewing.
