Hi all

I repair and sell on some small tools such as chainsaws, wacker plates and disc cutters.

Sell on eBay and Facebook etc.
Now it sounds bad (maybe even racist?) but generally on Facebook I ignore any Travelers, never had any experience dealing with them but the storys you here has made me avoid it.

Long story short, one has slipped through the net via a eBay guest account, I've called the guy and quickly realised he's a traveller ( trying his best to hide the accent ). He's made some comments about how many I have for sale, and wants to see several.
The worryer in me is thinking he has now seen every thing I have for sale on eBay and will realise I have estimated £3k in small tools in my garage if he comes here.
Strangely he even made a comment about "I'm not going to rob you or anything, I'm a legitimate business", guess I sounded hesitant about the whole thing.

At the moment he hasn't got my address, do I go through with this or block him and move on with life?

Cheers

Did you ask him what the legitimate business was?

Depending on the cost of the tools and potential for selling multiple items, and how far he is, you could offer to take them to him, or meet in a local industrial estate during office hours so there are people around? Otherwise, block and move on.

No the richman thing is a old username, not attached to anything of concern.

Yeah I have thought about meeting somewhere else but wanted to hear everyone's thoughts first

If there's any doubt, there's no doubt.

Block and move on, sounds like a pillock!

If in doubt, have nothing to do with him, they are your tools and it's your house so you can decide who visits. I certainly wouldn't be letting anyone in my garage who I didn't want in there. There will be other buyers out there.

If I'm selling summat on Facebook, if I don't like the look of someones profile I don't even respond to their messages, I just ignore them.

Do not have anything to do with him-seriously.

I’ve never robbed anyone. Funnily enough I’ve also never felt the need to reassure someone I’m not going to rob them.

Presumably you don't have an accent that makes people immediately think you're going to rob them.

On the other side of this, I had a mate who was Irish and struggled sometimes buying things like that and selling things too. People heard his accent and assumed. Yet he was the nicest, funniest, caring and respectful guy you could have met. He wouldn’t have dreamt of wronging someone.
But on the other hand I wouldn’t trust a traveller with anything or anything he said.

And again. Every single interaction I have had with this lot has ended in trouble.

One of the truest things ever said.

I’d be giving this a wide birth if it were me, whether that be at my home address, or meeting on neutral ground.

Presumably you buy these tools you fix you move on, so they’re probably mostly nicked in the first place. Circle of life
