Fair point, but they'd also struggle to keep up under 'normal' UK weather conditions lol.
That's part of the reason I moved the Subarus so much.

Living in the north of England, they really did feel good in the wet. I quite fancy the idea of a spec b legacy but they are all getting on in years now and I was looking for something to rely on.

They're properly quick they may not win a 0-60 due to fwd but in roll ons they be right there.

Both have LSD's & actually get the power to the road well in all conditions.

Hmm, I've owned cars with an LSD and though helpful with FWD cornering, in the wet they didn't make much difference.

Definitely agree that AWD makes a difference on stty northern roads.

Makes ALL the difference. For year-round fun a cheap tuned Imprezza is hard to beat. What about one of the 2011 ish Sti hatchbacks? Parcel shelf out for the dog?

This is what I've been looking at.

Can't post a link currently.

They seem a decent option between 12 and 17k

Already mentioned, but Focus RS would be worth a look. I was out in one last week and it's a bit of a hooligan when opened up. It's got a good AWD system where I believe it can send up to 70% to the rear axle and 100% of that to an individual wheel for proper torque vectoring.

I'd disagree but will say when really pushing on it makes a difference but I generally don't go to those levels in the wet.

In which case I'd say the Focus RS will be the car for you.

I'll have a proper look at the fords this weekend

Currently edging towards one of the later 5 door Imprezas as they aren't mad money. And have been tempted by the estate Legacy spec B - I had an 05 plate for a couple of years when the kids were small and it was a good car - totally different from the brief I accept but also relatively cheap and I am now a refined gentleman rather than a boy racer.

I originally started looking for a lease deal on a warm hatch so this could end up anywhere.

FK8 Type R. FWD aside they are a hoot to drive, 320bhp, 4 door, Japanese, brash styling with a big spoiler, sporty interior with bucket seats etc rather than a nice interior you get in something like an S3.

If it must be 4WD then a Focus RS

My mate test drove a Type R before getting the Focus RS, he said it was a brilliant car but he did notice in the wet it would struggle to get traction under full power, especially from a standstill and it would do that bouncing thing, similar to when you try and wheelspin on anti-skid material. I've not driven it myself, so just going on his word. It's a shame it's not AWD.

Back in day I always ran an Impreza as my day to day car

I am now thinking of getting back into something similar ideally on a decent lease or contract hire deal.

I appreciate that motoring has moved on but what are people driving that's the 2020s equivalent to a 2000s Impreza?
Nothing will be like one of those everything is more refined, I'd suggest taking a good look at the PS308GTI, or i30N Performance.
I don't think either will have near the same excitement. Didn't OP say quick?
Aren't the MK3 Focus RS known for not making book power? Golf R/Cupra are known to make more power than claimed, so they actually feel just as quick, if not quicker. Unsure on the other marques but they shouldn't feel much far off the pace.

I'd definitely be tempted by the honda if it didn't have the massive spoiler

There is a Sportline FK8 that ditches the big wing. Might not be that many of them about though.

Not sure of your budget, but Gen4 Lib S402 manual wagon - 0-60 around 5sec, plenty of hound space…

Collection might cause a bit of grief…

I’ve got my eye on a manual S402 saloon when I no longer need a large family wagon - something like this…

…which unfortunately is only about 20km from me…

my Wife has a Mk3 Focus RS

Its a great daily car, will quite happy pootle about like a normal focus would but then when you want to push on it it becomes an RS.

It doesn't feel that fast but when you look at the speedo it tells a different story! Its very planted, it feels like a 4wd car and when you want to you can provoke the rear to move about.

If you really really push on the car just gets better too in my experience.

I ran a Leon Cupra ST 300 for 3 years which I think due to its size and performance would feel very familiar to anyone who owned an Impreza, especially the wagon, but missing the distinctive boxer warble obviously. Even down to having lower rent plastics around the cabin (compared to the Golf R for example). Not the most entertaining of chassis’ but a very competent all-rounder none the less, and I would have another one at the drop of a hat.
