In November I sold a 2017 non running Hyundai to a Senegalese gentleman. No, wait. Stay with me here. He travelled from Edinburgh to Exeter on the National Express, saw the car and transferred the money. Car is paid for, no scam.

However, he said he'd arrange collection to take the car to Tilbury by the middle of December at the latest. The car is still at my place. The V5 is in his name, I have no idea if he's sorned it. It certainly isn't insured.

What would you do?

I messaged him today to say that from Monday (22nd) I'll be charging £20/day storage and the car will not be released until the storage is paid. If it is still with me by Feb 22nd it will be towed to the nearest lay-by and left. Am I being unreasonable? Every time I've contacted him it'll be 'next week' or someone is out of the country/sick/some other spurious excuse.

TL;DR Bloke bought my car two months ago and still hasn't collected it. But has paid for it.

I40 touring. 230k on it, 1.7 diesel with a shot bottom end.

It's Sorn. I've just checked.

He reckoned he could get a cheap engine shipped to Senegal from Canada or possibly Egypt. Neither were my problem.

And yes, he travelled the length of the country to sit in the car for 10 minutes. Then paid in full. silly

I have absolutely no idea.

Before he paid he said he would arrange recovery within two weeks which I raised an eyebrow at, but agreed. After all he had travelled the length of the country.

No attempt to recover the money.

I think he didn't realise the recovery costs to Tilbury. Again, not my problem.

All of £750 I think. I can't honestly remember!

Nope. I kindly picked him up at 1140 on the Saturday (he left Edinburgh 2130 Friday) and by 1300 he was back at the bus station with nothing to do until 0100 Sunday when the Flixbus left.

All that for a £750 non running Hyundai that has been to the moon and back.

Takes all sorts I suppose.

Well, my shift it or pay storage seems to have had the desired effect.

He's apparently got a recovery vehicle coming. I'll believe it when I see it. Watch this space.

Ahh, sorry.

Within a week of my "shift it, or pay storage" a man with a beaver tail wagon turned up to take it to Tilbury.

Last weekend oddly enough the buyer contacted me to tell me it had arrived safely in Senegal, but somewhere en route the headlights and grille had been stolen. So now there is a knackered i40 sitting in Senegal with no headlights, grille and a totally knackered engine. smile

Sort of. He did spend a weekend on National Express to spend ten minutes looking at the car. laugh

I was hugely sceptical when I had the initial enquiry, obviously. But he transferred the money in front of me. And went happily on his way.

For those of you who may be interested. Here it is in Senegal. I kid you not!

I think he meant the two LED spotlights I fitted to disguise a pheasant strike. The grille is still broken. It's also picked up some evil dents and scrapes down the passenger side.

I suppose your average Senegalese won't care. After all, they've got heated seats and steering wheel. biggrin
