New Cupra Leon ST gets 333hp, torque splitter diff

Sound familiar? But if you've been waiting for a new fast estate, look no further

All too often a cosmetic refresh is criticised for being too modest and not changing enough; well, there’s no danger of that accusation being levelled at the new Cupra Leon and Formentor. Following a very successful year and a bit for Cupra (120,000 deliveries in 2023, and 56,600 already in Q1), both have undergone a facelift that ‘embraces the brand’s new design language’. You can say that again.

Now hot hatch, fast estate and performance SUV get a ‘shark-nosed face’, a ‘big, bold lower mouth’ and an ‘aggressive look’. Seemingly nothing is safe from the curse of the big grille. New triangular matrix LEDs feature front and rear, the latter pointing to the illuminated Cupra logo. There’s a new bronze and grey on the colour palette in case there weren’t enough flat shades available before. The interior benefits from more recycled materials, digitalisation is a focus, the stereo is improved…

Hold on, though, because there is some proper PH interest in the new Leon and Cupra. Available for the Formentor and the ST wagon (evoking memories of the smart old Cupra R estate), the best bits of the new VW Golf R and Audi S3 will be available. So that’s 333hp from the 2.0-litre TSI, the torque splitter rear differential, and Akebono brakes. Which is quite interesting. This being new Cupra, they’re more interested in talking about sustainable jewellery and the Cupra Catwalk, but an uptick in power and some proper chassis hardware feel very worthwhile for a fast estate that could pass quite a few by.

There are improvements for the other powertrains, too. As with their stablemates in the group, the plug-in Cupra benefit from extra range (more than 62 miles) and faster charging (50kW DC) alongside a 272hp output from the petrol-electric 1.5-litre turbo. But if you’d prefer to keep things old-school (insofar as that is possible with Cupra) the range-topping five-door hatchback retains the tried-and-tested combination of 300hp and front-wheel drive, albeit through a new front diff. The interior gets a spruce, too, mainly to incorporate the larger 12.9-inch infotainment screen (and backlit slider controls), but also to deliver upgraded seats and new trim materials. No prices or exact UK specs yet, but deliveries are due to kick off in the summer.

Should the word be vectoring rather than splitter?

As usual I like the looks - I very much like the look of all Cupra variants. They all look much more interesting than their VW group counterparts.

I am however a little tired of seeing Formentors everywhere. By comparison I hardly ever see the Cupra Leon or Leon estate.

Price? £35-£40k plus for a SEAT! The world's gone mad.

Seams reasonably priced TBH in comparison to its peers.

My 2020 Leon Cupra ST was £32K so that doesn't seem too bad in the overall scheme of things considering the extra power and tech you're getting over the old model.

How can they just steal the moniker "ST" from Ford and use it?

Probably because it isn’t Ford’s “moniker”?

Holy crap that front is bad. The Leon needed some aggression but didnt need to be in mad max

I have huge soft spot for the old Cupra hot hatch models, loved the old Ibiza Cupra R, the Leon 225 CR etc, but wouldn't get near my short list today

So it gets the Golf R 333bhp engine and is likely to be about £20-£30k cheaper. I mean I'll believe it when I see it.

Not a bad deal if it is true even if it is just FWD. It's not as good looking as the earlier ones though.

The new grille is very weird, on the Leon it looks like a cobweb and on the Formentor it looks like it's been in a crash

confused

The old Cupra estate with ~300PS and 4wd started at about 48k, so outrage pricing needs updated smile

Cupra sales are rising, but is that at the expense of SEAT sales ?

Do Cupra and SEAT combined now sell more than SEAT used to ? Never really understood the point of Cupra in the VAG grand scheme of things, assuming there is one...

You'd have to lock it in a huge bank vault overnight or install 20 inch armour plated doors to stop the scrotes breaking in for the keys.

SEAT is all but dead, the brand is going to be killed off eventually.

SEAT grew sales globally by 24% in 2023 and by 58% in the UK, they are just two different brands from the same company within the VW group, both are growing.

Will Cupra sales overtake SEAT yes on current trends but you're not killing a brand that is growing and selling nearly 300k units a year, the two brand strategy has worked well.
