Can anyone recommend a cheap golf gps? Either a watch or handheld device.

I used to have a shot scope V3 but I didn't like the fact I had to wear it on my left hand to ensure the watch and the sensor connects (I wear a watch on my right hand). Plus I used to have an apple watch but that's also gone.

Sold the V3 and bought a cheap range finder, but it's hit and miss picking up the flag.

I thought going back to a GPS device might just be easier, or is it really worth forking out for a Bushnell?

I have the cheapest Garmin watch I could get, I think it's now the S12 but I have the S10. Only got it because the strap on my S1 broke. Does all the basics -- distance to front, middle and rear of green plus distance to hazards and layup distances.

I use a Garmin Fenix and a Bushnell V6 slope. The Bushnell is very expensive but works an absolute treat. I did have a Shotscope laser and it was garbage in comparison

Might be worth looking at the Shot Scope L4 - rather than a watch it clips on to a belt buckle or a golf bag but still has all the shot tracking built in - think you just have to touch the L4 with the tag and it will record the shot. Looks pretty decent value at about £120.

I've got the Shot Scope laser and about this time last year I was ready to chuck it in landfill, but have found it far more reliable since I started putting the cross hairs on the flag before I start it, rather than try to find it after it's started focusing.

I am seeing lots of good reviews of the Nikon range finders though, seems very well priced and comparable to the Bushnell models in terms of accuracy. Probably where my money would go if I was buying again.

Got a team match for Stone tomorrow - we were lucky enough to get promoted last season so now we're in Division 2 of the North Staffs league. Means we are in the big boys league now and only get a maximum of 2 shots no matter the difference.

Playing with my buddy who's off 6 and me off 9, should be a fun day.

Oh and it's away at The Chase, which could be interesting smile
Just back from this, me and my buddy managed to win 4 and 3 and the team drew, which is a pretty good result away from home in our first game in the big boys league.

We were 4 up after 7 and cruising until they started coming back at us around the turn, ending up 2 up going down 14. We were all near the green and my partner was about 30 yards left, from where he decided a flop shot was the way forwards which he left 4 feet away and sank the putt to get us back to 3 up - then we both had shots up 15. We were all about 100 yards away from the pub on a Par 5 - they got the shanks and we both left ours inside 20 feet and that was that.

Played really well tee to green, but god I need some help on the greens. Barely holed anything inside 10 feet and missed a couple of easy 2 footers, so confidence is generally shattered. Looks like that's what I'm working on the next couple of weeks....

Yes, the one about 'do you think you're good enough to play well with a bad attitude?' is one I wouldn't mind passing on to a few players I know – not that it would make the slightest difference.
Absolutely & i’m going to try to take it onboard myself! Golf is hard enough at the best of times! The bit about ‘do you really expect to hit perfect shots & golf is about how good your misses are’, hit home!
100 percent, it might sound a bit hokey to some but to me it's great when a player with the career that Harrington has had reminds us of what's important in the game.
Tried the LAB DF3 putter today, first thought was an unexpected one viz how nicely the ball comes off the face. That hasn't really been a part of the PR on this putter but it definitely feels nicer than the Odyssey fang I've been using up to now and that's without the soft insert that the Odyssey has. Lining it up was a doddle and the ball did seem to go in the desired direction more often than not. Seemed to be easier to control distance too but of course both of those things usually happen with any putter when you've been on the practice green for 10 mins. We'll see how it goes in the heat of battle.

Thanks Bodhi, Ray and Carl. Will take a look and see what I can find

Nice comfortable win in the end.
I find practicing on a short puttout mat with a setup mirror helps me with short putts as I can see I’m setting up, and keeping the club square.

I had a strange round yesterday.

Drive it ok, but had no real idea what shot shape I was getting.

I was 5 over after 4. Had a 90° shank with a 9 iron on 1, missed the green right by 30 yards with a wedge on 4. Blame the mud all. Nuked a 6 iron long on 3, same with a gap wedge on 4 with a duff chip thrown in.
5 wasn’t much better but I got up and down for a par.

I then played the next 13 holes 1 over with some solid golf before bogeying the last 2.

It was one of those day where every approach or chip was from a scruffy lie, or if I missed a fairway there was mud in the ball. I burned the edge or lipped out a few birdie putts.

After a double on the 4th I could have pulled the eject handle, but stuck at it and scored ok in the end.

On the the Monthly Medal today.

I wear a Garmin Fenix 7 - admittedly not cheap but it also does all of my running and other fitness stuff.

I had a Fenix 3 and that supported Garmin Golf app. Maybe a 2nd hand one would be a good shout. Not the 3 but maybe a later one.

What about a second hand apple/android watch?

I used to use my apple watch but since I moved to a pixel I had to sell it.

Might look at a cheap android watch and use the app on my phone. Will take a look

That's my plan for this week is to spend some time in the man cave on the Putt Out mat. Also thinking about going left hand low for short putts, as when I've used it previously it was far better for keeping the putter face square than my current standard grip.

Also, just had a proper weird experience at Stone. Popped in to pay my knockout fees and had a quick look in lost property. I found 2 of my old shirts (including an original Tiger Woods polo) I haven't seen in 15 years, and two of my dad's shirts. He died in 2009....

76 gross in the Medal (+4 gross and -1 handicap). Beautiful weather, light breeze and 18c by the end.

Played solid and started with 8 pars, loose drive on #10 cost me a shot but really pleased overall and holed our brilliantly. Only missed one putt from <8ft and holed a few decent putts for par. Greens were absolutely pure which helps..

Played with a mate who shot a solid +1 gross

I have the galaxy watch 5 pro and use the Arcoss app because I have the smart grips on my clubs. I don't know if there is a free version of the app but it is good but it is £12 per month for the full package. I might look at Shotscope next time as it doesn't need a sub.

A few decent shots with the Callaway/Costco driver today. Tried to focus on hitting up to the ball and didn't lose any away to the right. A couple of skied shots though, but those were straight.

Do you mind having your phone out on the course? Because if you don’t there’s really no need to fork out for a dedicated device. The Golf Pad app works perfectly on iPhone (and android I assume). All the normal yardages available, plus satellite pictures with the ability to tap anywhere on the screen for a distance/line to whatever you choose.

Works well for me and takes no more time than getting a laser out or checking a dedicated GPS device.

I normally use Mscorecard but might give that a go. Cheers
