Would it not be great if it was a 'you don't have Nixon to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference.' type announcement, followed by, 'if these daftness think I'm helping them out again, they got another thing coming...'

Sadly, a spine and perspective would be required for this....

The main perspective being the First Minister’s final salary for life pension?

Honestly, there was a “snouts out of the trough” party running in 2026 I’d vote for them but sadly the only individuals that the Scottish Parliament appears to attract are troughers.

There was some rubbish printed about the FM pension scheme. £52k would be for someone doing decades in the role. Humza will get about £2k pension at age 65 from his time as FM. Generous but not out of line with other similar jobs.

" Mr Yousaf's pension for being First Minister will be either 1/40 or 1/50 of his final salary - depending on which level of contributions he choses to make. That will also only be for each year in office.

The Scottish Parliament says his pension will be in the order of £2k per annum, payable from age 65. "

Fair enough, though 1/40th does still seem pretty generous, 1/60 - 1/80th and career average would be more in line with the remaining defined benefit schemes, though this https://www.civilservicepensionscheme.org.uk/your-... suggests a current civil service accrual rate of 2.232% or 1/45th roughly.

This is the exact polar opposite of his intentions. He's the fall-guy and he knows it, happy to take two for the team.

The rush to shove him to the front tells you everything. This is managed decline.

I really hope that Kate Forbes announces her intention to stand this afternoon otherwise it will be a continuation of the so called “progressive” policies for the next two years, which will to do immense damage to Scotland. I can fully understand why she would want to sit this one out though. She would be insane to join Swinney’s team because that is not going to go well.

Also, if Kate Forbes was to win then there would surely be internecine warfare within the parliamentary party (and the greens), which may just hasten an early election.

Swinney has stitched this up really well and can step down after the 2026 election either as a victor or the kicking ball with Labour running a minority government. There is no sense in Forbes standing now as one day the Greens will vote them down again. Progressive policies will thus remain for another two years. Best for Forbes to take a cabinet role now and rebuild the party with other non-Sturgeonites after 2026.

Bad tempered FMQ today, a joy to watch. Must get “progressively “ worse in months to come.

Slaver still pushing banishing wood fires in new build and wanting to divert road building money elsewhere.

When is she going to get a common sense injection or tablets.

Forbes will probably be offered and will accept a fairly powerful role in Boppo's cabinet. Might even be the finance brief again as it keeps her away from social issues that the Zedleg contingent get all haughty about if someone with her common sense predilections gets anywhere near.

I still see this as a sign that the SNP are resigned to defeat at the next two elections. The prospect of an 'I don't give a crap' Swinney running Scotland for the next two years just depresses me though. He has no reputation to salvage so will do what he likes.

I sat in several meetings with Swinney present way back in 2017 when he was Education Secretary and I know exactly what Douglas Ross was referring to with 'no so honest John'. He's the kind of guy who would say something to your face and then do the exact opposite when your back was turned.

Yep. says something when none of the present cabinet, chosen in theory as the most capable MSPs, want the top job. The SNP are heading for defeats at two elections. Much better to get the job at the bottom than take the blame for defeat. Those who are laughingly referred to as future FMs like MacAllan or Gilruth are in their 30s I think. Decades of time ahead to become FM at a better time.

I think Swinney and Forbes will do a deal with the intention of making this happen.

Hopefully Forbes decides now is not the time to run.

At this point of her life does she need to start the internal snp war that will ensue, it probably makes more sense to pick up the pieces after the next election and try to steer the party in a new direction having obviously failed?

Updated: Forbes obviously read my post, before her announcement a few minutes ago? smile

Forbes will not challenge Swinney.
Shes going to take a plum job in Swinneys cabinet and sit back as it collapses.

Douglas Ross baited Dumza well today...he lit the blue touch-paper and stood back and watched, Dumza bit and blew up into a torrent if insults...he's an angry man and too thick to see he's having the pish ripped out him.

Its a good watch...
