The Team announces that Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey will leave the Red Bull Technology Group in the first quarter of 2025.

The engineering supremo will step back from Formula 1
design duties to focus on final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the hugely anticipated RB17.

He will remain involved in and committed to this exciting project until its completion. We’d like to thank Adrian for our achievements in the time that we have worked together so far. He has been instrumental for us in achieving a remarkable seven Formula One Drivers’ and six Constructors’ Championship titles - totalling 118 victories and 101 poles including the STR 2007 pole and victory.

Horny gives him a glowing testimony, when many reports say his behaviour is the reason he's leaving.

So thats technical gardening leave for a year?

He is out of the F1 design team immediately. He will continue on the separate road car project. He is free to do what he wants first quarter 2025.

A years gardening leave would perhaps tie up with his yacht build and round the world sailing plan.

It's effective gardening leave (it actually isn't because he has a supplier agreement, he's not an employee) at least for the rest of this season, during which time he's able to finish up the RB17 side project. Which is sensible, he needs to see that through and it's not strictly speaking an 'F1 thing', in terms of the teams competitive business and F1 entry.

And his immediate shift to full focus on the RB17, does make it true that he's 'taking a step back from F1', but I wouldn't read too much into anything in the official press releases, they're obviously designed to not raise or answer any questions and to smooth the entire thing over with niceties.

And interestingly it would mean he never has to work with Horner again from now, which might be in line with the rumours.

Fallout and irreconcilable differences in what happened and how it was handled?

Must be the case that Newey is seriously unhappy as a result of the Horner goings on - he's just walked from the team while the best F1 car he has designed to date is unstoppable. That demonstrates how far from jovial and happy the relationship is.

I'm sure he would have shaken Horner's hand after saying his piece and announcing he's off, and the subsequent tying up of loose ends and the plan to focus solely on the RB17 project. They have a long history together and some great results. But nonetheless, he is leaving at a time he should be delighted with the car and team, but he obviously is not. I'm guess he feels disappointment above anything else, with regard to Horner right now.

Actually if he did shake Horner's hand, I hope he washed his own hand shortly afterwards..

Just playing Devil's advocate; he may be able to forgive Horner's misdemeanours, but may be disaffected by how Red Bull have handled the fall out and the treatment of the accuser. It may be the employer and not the leader that has caused him to wish to leave.

I doubt he is leaving the team because of one thing one guy has done...

Or all the above?

Either way, it's Horner's mess, however the details play out and affect certain other people.

Imagine red bull actually picking Horner over Newey! Absurd the way they handled this.

Italian press reports that he’s apparently met with Vasseur.

So that ball starts to gather a bit of pace.

That assumes that a choice has been made.

Maybe Newey was going regardless. There's plenty of story around that the Horner scandal was really only the final straw and it was the lack of credit he received which was the real issue.

It’s all a bit like when a government minister gets fired or walks out over major differences, yet there’s somehow a very polite exchange of letters made public.

Great news if Fred Vasseur indeed didn’t travel to Miami yesterday. Newey to Ferrari could actually be on!
(I reckon the deal was actually done in outline some months ago, before LH signed).

This.

Newey is 65 years old. I would imagine that Red Bull were planning for him to retire at some point.

I had no idea and am rather bafflled that a designer would have/need a 'manager'.
Why? Earns big bucks. Skilled at designing cars. Not skilled at negotiating commercials.

Eddie Jordan. Not skilled at designing cars. Skilled at negotiating commercials.
That’s a rather good way of putting it.

Have to LOL at the idea that Newey turned up to a meeting with Horny, Marko, and possibly someone from the Red Bull Company, to announce that he’s leaving the team and that *this guy* will be negotiating on his behalf…

Very canny, is this Mr Newey. Getting out a couple of years early is worth a fortune in both time and money. He’s 65, and probably doesn’t want to be working full time for too many more years, especially with that lovely new boat sitting idle in the harbour.

Especially given that the accuser is said to have been the Exec Assistant to both men. If that’s correct, Newey will have worked very closely with her as the main non-technical contact with the team.

Not difficult to imagine that he thinks she’s been treated terribly by the company.

So Jordan does Newey's press releases as well.
