JCB are doing very good business selling or leasing the pot hole pro’s to local authorities that do their own roads maintenance and the national tier 1’s used by LA’s have contracted out maintenance.

Problem is the amount that need doing and the leadtime on the kit. Also once the pothole exceeds a certain width / depth then you can’t use that piece of kit to repair it.
Talking to highways inspector 15 years ago a large part of the problem appears to be LA’s making highway inspectirs redundant.
In the area I lived in N.Wales, there were 3 inspectors, and they aimed to inspect every road every 6 months.
Two inspectors had been made redundant, the one remaining inspector I chatted to said some more rural lanes/roads would most likely not be inspected for another 2-3 years [i]minimum[ii].

But as others have said, when the repairs are carried out to such a poor standard, they last no more than 2-3 months anyway …

LA’s for various reasons all too regularly do the wrong type of repair for state the pothole is in, local patches with cold mix when the damage is down to the lower layers. Then you have those decide to do a temp repair but never come back to a permanent repair before the repair refails.

New bits of kit are amazing apparently, some of our lads do highways work for tier 1’s when we have nothing for them. However they’re not suitable for all types of failure and if the LA leaves it to long much more expensive and time consuming repair is needed.

One odd thing that struck me beyond the accident was the claim that 60% of these cars in the UK are declared off road. Is this in any way realistic?.
This doesn’t strike me as unrealistic. Most owners of these cars will own multiple cars. Why have it taxed the entire year if you’re only going to use it for a few months in summer?

RIP.

Very sad situation, poor chap. I appreciate the damage doesn’t look bad enough to be fatal, but we don’t know all the facts. If I were to assume, it would be that the gent had a heart attack or something similar.

I have not seen any official statement as to the cause yet.

The drivers side (its LHD) looks to have taken a big hit. Someone might correct me but I dont know if the 997 GT2s had curtain airbags, but I dont think they did.

I think that some councils with an anti-car agenda and budget problems may view potholes as reverse speed bumps that slow traffic down.

RHD and maybe he'd have survived?

I was thinking the same. I can’t figure out why there is so much damage to the near side of the car and the off side looks basically untouched. Surely dodging a pot hole would put the offside at greater risk?

Real shame it ended this way, RIP

The local authorities source out the works to third parties that couldn't care less about the repair jobs they do, plus, nobody from LA, appears to check any sort of third party work

Same old, no bloody accountability.

There was another serious crash on the A286 yesterday, road closed all day so I hope everyone was okay but not looking good. It happened at Kings Drive which is the end of that long straight between Midhurst and Fernhurst before you start going down the hill.

Yeah my bad - I forgot they are there. I don’t think mine triggered (which would be surprising), but can’t say for certain.

Maybe someone at the local authority should made accountable for it, after all it should have been filled in.

That one sounds a bit odd, the driver was apparently found shot.

RIP. Very sad. Agree disgusting the council only now fix the pot hole after someone has passed away. The council needs to be held to account for this.
