Surely for lots of small journeys you need an economical small car ?
Or a massive cheap petrol barge.

Think about it.

A V6 Vectra, for under £1000. No depreciation. Cost about 25p a mile on fuel.
Vs a "small" car costing £10k (or £17k in the first post) depreciating like a stone. That's buys alot of fuel.

It's not just about having the cheapest motoring possible for me, I want somewhere that's nice to sit and nice to drive with a decent bit of poke and a few gadgets.

The 5 series certainly has a nice interior, but the problem is with the battery, its a good chunk smaller than that in the 330e, it's possibly ok for my use, but the 330e is probably a better car for me.

Tesla's are a bit bland and they all drive like an arse but if you have a BMW you're half way there already hehe

Seriously though, short regular journeys you probably want an EV or a little zippy city car/hatch. Not a big lump. A model S would fit. I-Paces are in that price range and the odd Polestar which all have the space.

In terms of Hybrids, not sure you'll get anything more interesting than what you have. Few Mercs, an Infiniti, a Lexus?

The CVT is perfect around town.
I dont understand anyone who drives a CVT and is ok with it tbh....I drove a hybrid with one and it was like going back to the 1970s
I'm the other way. I had a Prius hire car for a few months and for school runs (10 miles x 2 per day, slooooow urban traffic) I thought it was absolutely brilliant, perfect tool for the job. Not particularly great for NVH on a motorway, but around town it was fabulous.
The ones I've driven have a real bad lag when you go to pull away at a junction or roundabout and are awful if you push the car a bit quicker. Horrible things IMO
it's v.fit for purpose and responds well to a slightly different style of driving. enjoy mine for that reason.
Sports car they are not.

I'm glad you like yours, I would never have one myself though.

Yeah maybe an EV is the answer, but I would need to put more money in to it if I did, a nice 330e is £14k where as a nice EV is £3-4k more + another £1k if I fitted a wall box.

Yeah. I read that and I'm thinking this would be perfect.

Just like the 330e they increased the size of the battery:

I will keep an eye on autotrader, but currently the 530e with a decent battery is over my budget. The car is also possibly a bit too big for my needs.

Yep, was going to suggest a Polestar 2 as seems to tick all of your boxes (size, 400hp, lots of kit in pilot + plus spec), but you're looking at £18-20k in comparison.

You wouldn't necessarily need a wallbox for an EV BTW. Assuming you plan to charge a 330e off a 3 pin plug charger the same solution should work perfectly for an EV in your usage as easily adds 50-60 miles of range overnight. We've done it for 5 years with multiple EV's.

Don’t get too hung up on that. If you’re doing less than about 70 miles a day, you can easily replace that charge using a normal 3 pin plug socket overnight.

I did think to start with that you would definitely need a wall box for an EV, but it would seem that they aren't always needed, certainly for me with my use they don't seem to be. I would still want to get my outside socket checked over by an electrician though.

Mate, just buy a 330e. You are not only disregarding everything else suggested immediately, but always comparing back to a 330e.

You know what you want, just go get one.

Similar boat mate. I just do less miles than you so the EV slides even more out the picture.

I have been looking at various cars for a while and have already viewed and had already dismissed most of the cars that have been suggested. The reason for starting this was to see if I was missing anything.

Can you still make use of the overnight EV tariff at +-7.5p that electric suppliers offer without a wall box?

I think you can set charge times in the cars themselves, so they would only charge when it's cheap. I might be wrong though and all cars may not have this function.
