I’ve been up here for the last few days. The weather has been sublime!

I’m still up here for the next couple days so will post some pics when back - BUT!

First major disaster since I’ve been coming, I stupidly left my DSLR camera at the top of the applecross pass next to the road as I took some pictures for some cyclists then forgot to put it back in my bag and started driving off.

I got 2 mins down the road and realised so turned back but by this time it had GONE!

I can only hope some kind person took it to hand it in!

What will the local police station be to there?
Check the Applecross Inn, Lochcarron Spar and the Shieldaig shop/pub. Most stuff is handed in.

Local plod is in Lochcarron, but they will be closed, so nearest is in Portree.

Also: Send an email to the local round robin community... info@visittorridon.co.uk

If a local has it, you'll get it back.

Thank you so much! At this point I’ve basically resigned myself to thinking it’s on its way back to Europe in a campervan!

Update!

It’s been handed in to the Kyle police station!

Huge thanks to GetCarter and Judith @ the apple cross inn for spreading the word.

I found out as the bloke that found it and handed it in went on a Callum’s seal trip, told the (driver? captain) about finding this camera on the pass and he twigged it was mine after hearing from Judith.

Great to see there are still decent people about!

I’m now sat outside the apple cross Inn having a pint watching the sunset. Unfortunately no room at the Inn so I’m camping!

Any idea what time the police might actually be there or have I no chance with it being a bank holiday?

Surely this can’t carry on much longer. Tightarse campervans parking where they want is becoming a real pain.

Even if they paid a few quid they’d still avoid the extortionate prices for pitching south of the border. An extreme example but I saw a pitch on Air BnB being advertised for £75 night. For a piece of grass. They’re taking the mick.

Did I miss a post between these 2, not sure I understand the relevance between them?

Yep commented on this growing problem before. Constantly cluttering up all the laybys and beauty spots for days and nights contributing nothing to the local economy. Boils my piss.

Yorkshire Dales Lake District and Wales increasingly adversely affected also by these tight arses also leaving their accumulated filth and rubbish.

Said it before but a simple system of compulsory providing proof of booking into an official site should be implemented and if no proof then a large fine ££.

I've just been in the Hebrides for a week. Speaking to one of the campsite owners he's got a growing issue of a minority parking in the nearby layby, then sneaking to use the campsite facilities. He's having to get locks on everything - even then, they're cheeky enough to wait for a hapless camper on the site to emerge from showers and 'grab the door', or even just line up to use the blackwater dump saying 'don't lock it, I need it'. This from a small site on a croft where there's not someone on site all the time.
Really really stty behaviour - particularly when there's proper sites and community association run Aires all over the place.

I was up Mam Tor (hardly a big hill) in the Peaks a few months back. With a group of people doing a night hike. It was a real surprise to come across around ten of these things all huddled together at the top of the old road. All the cliches were in force. Knackered vans, rubbish, and that particularly distinct aroma. And they did not take kindly to us being there.

I'm not talking about "travellers" just the modern vanlifer.

The problem with some idea of booking is that there's simply no way of enforcing any such rule - the area is just too big.

Plus there's the old issue of right to roam. Which makes Scotland all the more attractive now that land owners are taking action over this sort of thing south of the border.

There is no Right to Roam.
There's a Right to Responsible Access.
And it has never applied to motorised vehicles.

Sadly there's a growing number of people who do not understand this.

Technically the name may not be correct. But the law professor in this article thinks it’s the same thing?

Christ, the entitlement is strong..... Despicable behaviour, to save a few quid.

Evening this has nothing to do with tight arsed camper drivers as I’m looking for some ideas, inspiration and/or insider knowledge for my holiday to Skye in June so any help appreciated.

We have had a couple of driving holidays in the Highlands over the last three years with the first being a weeks road trip starting at Thornhill near Dumfries up to Oban over to Loch Ness on to Aviemore and then down to Loch Lomond. Second one first night we stayed near Ayr, ferry over to Arran, and then up to Fort William for a week and we did drives to Mallaig, Skye, Glencoe and other roads in the area.

What I’d like to know is what would be a good route from Loch Lomond to Skye and what roads near Skye should I be looking at? I know there’s one to the Kylesku bridge which Reg Local did so will be including that but are the any others? Obviously there will be but some hints and tips would be good.

Also I’ve done parts of the Old Military road on the previous trips but want to do it all this time so will be heading from Skye over to Nairn with an overnight stop at Ballater before heading south the next day, any tips on the bit between Skye and Nairn?

I know I’m asking a lot, and should probably do what we’ve done before and just follow our noses, but wouldn’t want to miss anything out that others really rate. I have booked-marked a couple of threads/routes others have posted previously but think it’s worth asking the question.

For what it’s worth I’ll be driving an FK2 Civic……

Thanks!

I’d head up through Glen Coe and head for Mallaig. From there you can get the ferry to Armadale and that stretch of road to Broadford is very good. Then the loop from there to Dunvegan and then head over to Uig. Up over the Quiraing to Staffin and then onto Portree.

Depending on where you are heading to on the way back, the A87 through Kintail is fantastic, if you want to switch it up then take the ferry from Kylerhea to Glenelg (The original Skye ferry) and you’ll come over the Ratagan which is an incredible viewpoint overlooking Kintail. You’ll come out on the A87 at Shiel Bridge.

As for roads near Nairn, head up the A939 to Dava and that takes you into the Cairngorms.

You mentioned the trip is June - when? Look at a few messages above for the link as the Glenshee road will be impassable due to roadworks at set times in May / June. I assume if you’re staying in Ballater then heading south the next day you’d be hoping to take the road over Glenshee?
