I am going with:

Muntjac Doe
Hit by vehicle
Scavenged by badgers and foxes. If you shot a deer and left it in the woods by the next day it would mostly be gone.

Human killing a deer would not cut it in half at that point.

We hit a (much bigger) deer up near Fort William in my friends Honda Civic many years ago.

Wrote the car off as it crumpled the front like we'd hit a lamppost. The head smashed the windscreen, the rear end went under the car and the deer split in half much the same as this one.

So I'm going to say I think they're just designed to split in half on impact.

I grew up in the countryside and can say with some confidence this was either:
Shark or
Baby Predator.

Yes, i should have said its a muntjac dear so not a massive great thing.

I think its got to be a poacher thats dumped it, pikies use this bit of road as a rat run down to their lair so perhaps one has been out shooting, took the meat end and chucked it out.

Do people eat these? i suppose they might do.

Just seemed a seriously bizaree corpse, i have never seen one effectively cut in half like that.
If you are shooting them for meat what you normally do is then open up the stomach cavity (length ways across the bottom) and leave the contents on the field for scavengers. The head and hoofs are then removed (hoves make great dog chews). The animal is then strung up, neck end up, and skinned. Then laid on a table and dissected into all the different meat cuts.

If it was a poacher then I would not expect any of it to have been left at the road as they are wasting half the meat.

People don’t eat enough of them. Everyone’s gone soft and don’t eat roadkill or wild meat anymore apart from a few. Most of it is good lean meat as well.

Driving around Norfolk a few years back I couldn’t believe seeing so many dead animals on the road side that haven’t been dealt with.
I suppose people don’t know how to deal with it anymore.
30 years ago people used to bring such things into the (rural) pub I worked at.
All of us in the kitchen knew how to hang then skin and prepare deer, rabbit, pheasant and anything else that was brought into us.

It all ended up on the menu, certainly wasn't much left at the side of the roads nearby lol
Eating roadkill is a pretty bad idea unless you are actually starving, or unless you have literally just hit it yourself. The impact often causes the stomach/digestive tract to split filling the body cavity with faeces which introduces all kind of bacteria to the carcass. It is one of the reasons a shot deer is gralloched as soon as possible, to allow rapid cooling, and prevent contamination. And there is always the question as to why that particular deer got hit - is it slow due to injury and maybe sepsis? or some other illness? This would also make it a bad idea to eat.

This one has just been sheared in half by a particularly boxy vehicle at speed. The shoulders are good meat too so wouldn't be wasted intentionally.

Yeh, I've seen photos of the countryside so that kind of makes me a qualified expert, and I agree with your conclusion as I've heard that sharks can survive out of water for quite a few days, and this one may have grown feet. Case closed smile

The deer in the op is almost certainly road kill, poachers wouldn't do the above. I see loads of deer on the side of the road looking similar. I hit one before Christmas and took it's head clean off, made a right mess of the front of my car where it went under and through the wheel arch.
