Forza Motorsport (2023)
Discussion
I'm a long time Gran Turismo player, but have dabbled in Horizon 4 for a bit of relaxed driving fun on the PC.
Forza has always nailed the 2 things GT has always missed, sound and car selection (as in seeming to include the cars I'd actually want to drive)
I'll be interested in how FM7 turns out, I drifted away from GT for years because of playing Assetto Corsa in VR on the PC, have been pulled back in to GT7 now with PSVR2 which satisfies my driving needs really, but the inevitably better 'structure' of FM7 in it actually being intended as an enjoyable game as opposed to a punishingly dull torture session as per GT means I may end up plugging the wheel into the PC instead...

What are the driving mechanics like on the Motorsport versions? I’ve only dabbled in the Forza Horizon variants with the wheel and soon switched back to controller as it was so unrealistic. Are the motorsport games better?
The driving physics are much better than Horizon in terms or realism but I agree they're probably not at Assetto Corsa level. Horizon would probably be unplayable with Motorsports physics.

I don't know what the actual facts of the matter ate these days. I feel like the physics have merged and drifted back n forth over the years. I'm probably remembering incorrectly but I thought that the point of Horizon originally was Forza Motorsport (cant remember if we were on 3/4/5 at the time) driving physics n the open world environment. It certainly felt pretty similar to me, I could do all the same sort of driving at a similar level in both. Horizon would probably be unplayable with Motorsports physics.
I think Horizon then went a little more arcade compared to Motorsport, which is understandable given the general mucking about you do in horizon compared to precision driving in Motorsports.
Then felt with Horizon 4 that they shifted the physics considerably, maybe back towards Motorsport and more realism. I was having much more trouble drifting and driving carefree on that one, similar to trying to do same in Motorsport 6, I was suddenly rubbish at drifting and larking about in both varieties.
I havent played Motorsport 7, wasn't enough new about it to make me get it, but Horizon 5 the driving has definitely swung way back to more lenient and fun.
A lot of real tracks are quite boring though, especially especially ones you can lap in two minutes or less in anything vaguely spicy, as they feel repetitive so quickly. I guess it's a limitation caused by track designers being unimaginative or not having much space to work with. Tracks without significsnt elevation changes are the worst.
The best tracks Forza Motorsport ever had, outside of the Nordschliefe, Le Mans (classic layout) and may Spa, were the Amalfi Coast and Fujimi Kaido tracks. Hopefully they will return.

I'd like to see more British tracks in the game, the sort of tracks that we see in BTCC. Oulton, Caldwell, Snetterton etc.
It would also be good to see more cars from specific racing series, not just a few random ones. I'm sure they could make quite a bit extra from DLC if they churned out a load of content every six months for a different racing series. Not just cars, new tracks too.

First part of the comment I can't really agree with, had plenty of enjoyable races on Forza in the past around tracks like Brands Hatch that comfortably take less than 2 minutes to lap. Agreed about Fuji Kaido being awesome however, loved Maple Valley too for the changes in geography and the combination of corners. It was so technical that to get a genuinely quick lap around there that was 'clean' (i.e. eligible for the leaderboard) felt like an accomplishment. Just hope that Turn10 resist the urge to 'make over' the tracks like Polyphony did with Grand Valley, Deep Forest and the rest.
I am a big Forza Motorsport fan after spending too much time on FM2, 3 and 4 (especially 4) on xbox 360 and luckily missing the xbone versions 5 and 6. 7 came to PC too and it was crap. I was cautiously optimistic about FM2023 but that is slowly being eroded away the more I read about it.
I'm not convinced about getting your bonus XP by starting further down the grid instead of by disabling assists. I get that they want to make the game accessible, and I am pleased they are included the wide range of accessible features to lower the barrier for entry for partially sighted people etc, but why remove the extra bonuses for being skilled?
The other bad thing with this is it seems that they looked at GT7 where you start further down the grid and often have only a few laps to make up 30 seconds or so to catch up with the leader (with some seriously weird AI catch up going on) and they thought "yes this is great racing!".
I hope they haven't got the wrong end of the stick with shifting a focus away from car collecting either. I love car collecting! But what I don't love is GT7 being funnelled down a very specific single route of car collecting, or Horizon's model of winning a new hypercar every 3 seconds. FM4 had you win a car every driver level, which is every few races, but you get a choice of ~4 cars and they're fairly basic at first. I hope it does have lots of cars and lots of choice for races.
I'm pleased the car level will get you a discount on upgrades across the whole manufacturer still. This lets me do my racing in a normal car and then, for free, experiment with putting a 6L V8 in a Chevy Matiz and seeing the carnage. I hope I can still do that!
Beside that moaning I guess I am still cautiously optimistic. Besides I still have FM4 and an xbox 360...

I like the sound of this, I found the structure of racing and collecting absolutely baffling in FM7. Making it simpler and focussing on making the car you have work for the championship rather than having 1500 eligible cars makes sense.

In regards to the car collection I did find FM7 a bit OTT with it, plus the whole thing Forza has started doing now where they'll have 20 versions of the same car (Porsche Cup Car for example) just with different livery. That's pointless and a cop out for the advertising where they say it launches with 500 cars but 300 of them are just different livery versions.
I'd be keen for them to do something similar to Horizon with timed exclusive cars available for certain challenges, but not in the same way where you have to log in and play every season of the series to build points over a week long period. Just have X car available for completing X challenge and job done. Make it harder for the rarer cars etc.
