If you don’t mind a hot hatch, for half your budget you could get an M140 modded with LSD, coilovers, bigger brakes, and 500bhp. Not the ultimate in ‘driving machine’ but be pretty quick on track, reliable and pretty cheap to maintain compared to proper M cars.
Do you think there’d be a huge difference in running costs between a 140 and an M2?

I have an MX5 that has 260bhp N/a with throttle bodies on a built engine that you would fit in…..
It’s a full race car, PM me if interested

I normally drive a lightweight track car, but the other week at Silverstone it was just too wet and cold, so not wanting to waste the fee, I took my 2005 997.1.

It was brilliant, it coped magnificently, and was huge fun, so confidence inspiring the way you can feel the limits of grip and trail brake to tighten the corners. I can’t imagine anything better for the price.

I’d highly recommend this as an option.

I’d never have considered these as an option they seem great value and tick most of not all of the boxes

I am sure others will have other opinions but here are mine on what you are looking for.

No matter how fast your car is on a TD, there WILL be someone faster & they may not be in the car you expect them to be in when you look round the paddock.

For this reason any first TD car, I would recommend a well-trodden path and one that can be fun wherever you are.

Pretty much the only car that fulfils this on your list and that you will fit in is the Megane.
The power is more for the road than the track as daft as that sounds. I intend to invest in lessons to try and improve so I know power isn’t the be all and end all on track
Except it’s FWD and he stated he wants RWD

Caterham SV with lowered floors will suit you fine, I’m 6’4 and no racing snake
Is it a big job to get the floors lowered?
It not huge, but I think there’s about 100 rivets to drill out and redo

He does alas there are lots of other things in his list that are clearly out and he did suggest it in his list.

Exige? That’s interesting all things considered they do seem to fit most of the boxes

I don’t think a car exist that’s hits everything so I’ll have to concede something and compromise.

Look for a GT86 that has had a supercharger added.

ETA it's a crying shame that this one is auto. £18k

Can you try before you buy?

A Cayman or 996/ 997 would both be great on track, however, the experience in an Exige/ Elise or Caterham is on a different level. I have a 996c2 which I’d like to take on track, but seems a waste of a potential day in a track car.

I did around 10 days in a Boxster before getting a Caterham. Took a day to get used to it, next stop is racing at Spa.

My choice would be a medium powered Caterham (say a 310) and move up when you can really extract everything out of it. It’s amazing how much they can take.

Donington Park, Oulton Park and even Silverstone aren’t that far.

Cost of entry is probably £10k difference to start and I’m sure disks/pads are double the price last time I was having mine done and there was an M2 in there also having some new disks. Then tyres are larger/more expensive.

Just to echo this.

Fantastic that you've got the bug, but as suggested I would seriously recommend trying a proper lightweight sportscar (caterham/lotus etc) if you've only ever done tin tops as they're a completely different experience. You may hate it, but I suspect that once you've had a taste you'll realise how much more fun they are.

I'm also local to you (having taken the long way home via kirklevington, picton, croft, cowtons, danby wiske, hurworth this afternoon following a run up on the moors around osmertherly). I took my old 118bhp caterham academy car around Teesside and that felt too big on that circuit. There's no way I'd take my M2C on it, let alone anything bigger/more powerful.

Elvington is also reasonably local but I've never done it.

I don't think there are any track days held at Elvington any more. At least not the proper ones, I think you can do an experience day there. Last time I did a track day there was 2003 I think.

I'd love to but how can i try before I buy? Do you mean another track day of some form? Any recommendations?

Well I fit in an Exige, kind of. It was very tight and the seats were a little snug and very unforgiving being carbon buckets. I may have to find a car without the carbon buckets for my fat ass and thighs to fit better.

It is very dependent on the type of circuit you want to drive.

A Caterham will be brilliant round Anglesey but you’d probably need to bring a book to read down the Hanger straight at Silverstone.

I was surprised at how much fun a relatively heavy Porsche was compared to my usual lightweight track car, and of course they’re far more practical away from the circuit.

The one thing I would not do referring to your original post, would be to get a McLaren 570s for track use, that’s just not the best solution.

Brilliant on track. Always an event on the road. Able to accommodate the tall and powerfully built.

I’d also be wary of getting something that is too fast. When I see stuff like exiges, GTR’s, Atom’s etc on track they always seem to be constantly stuck behind everything else. It doesn’t strike me as that much fun as you don’t get much opportunity to actually drive fast.
