I have no knowledge of how the legal side of these things work. But I am amazed someone at Netflix didn’t insist the characters and locations were not significantly changed.

It seems like they were not only asking for trouble with internet sleuth types, but purposely taunting the stalker and the abuser.

The writer has said he changed things so you would never be able to tell who they were. He’s laid clues on with a towel, it doesn’t take scooby doo levels of skill to work out who the abuser was, let alone the aldi version of his stalker who outed herself.

We decided to stop at episode 2. Seen enough. There was zero humour.

It only had one positive for me.

Only that the trans girlfriend was hot. Is the actor really trans?
My blond wife pointed out that she's just my type.
You are not alone in you conclusion lol.
She is.
She is what? Trans ? Hot ? My type ? All three ?

I must be one of the few that didn't really get the hype around it.

Must be missing something.

I see I'm not alone. The main protagonist was so frustrating, I disliked him more than the Mattha character.

Wondered what was off about the girlfriend. Didn't know she was trans but despite being attractive it felt like looking at your long lost sister or something.

I found him totally annoying too. Stupid decision after stupid decision. Martha was just mental, he had his marbles but put himself in bad situations.

That HAS to be a parody account.

Honestly don't think it is...
Bizarre!
I have an episode or two left to watch.

At the moment I don’t think it’s a true story. I came to see what others thought. I think it’s clever writing and manipulation of social media, using people’s obsession with armchair sleuthing.

It’s not hard to leave breadcrumbs. Create fake websites, Twitter accounts, Facebook etc. You don’t write a book, script and produce something like this overnight after all so it wouldn’t be hard.

It’s been done before. Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Fargo, The Blair Witch Project are just a few ‘based on a true story’.

I’ll watch the remaining episodes tonight and follow the story until the hype passes.

As Donny said himself, something along the lines of being famous at 30 and retired at 40? Gadd will no doubt live off this for a good while to come either way.

ETA I read a lot of Irvine Welsh many many years ago and Gadd’s writing style reminds me of him. Dark stuff in places, gritty and almost believable. Almost.

Possibly based very loosely around events Gadd has experienced. I think there’s a lot of sensationalism though.

Jesus, if you’re right, that’s some effort they have put in. They have been working on it since 2013 at lest and got a couple of Scottish MPs involved.

I enjoyed the show, although like others I did find myself frustrated with Donny, he kept bringing things on himself.

HOWEVER, as my wife pointed out, I'm making the assumption that other people think in the way I think, see the world in the same way and process thoughts & emotions the same. It's very easy for someone like me who has never experienced abuse of any kind, to sit and judge the actions of those that have.

Good point!

My ex wife constantly makes decisions that perplex me. Always doing stuff that only makes life harder.

I watched the show constantly shouting at our main man 'What on Earth are you doing? Stoppit!'

have just finished the last episode, hard to feel much sympathy for the man in this really, and feel they both need help with mental health, quite a sad story all round. Not sure how i feel about the guy playing himself, does smack of attention seeking abit, which i suppose was part of his problem all along, hope he finds the help he so obviously needs.

If she’s as innocent as she claims, why go to Piers Morgan rather than the police? It’d be easy to prove her innocents.

Somethings not right about her!

This is a public execution, yes it's been a car crash since it was aired on Netflix and Piers but this woman is not well.

That was uncomfortable and I genuinely feel guilty for watching that. Piers Morgan has exploited that woman who is very unwell.

I appreciate she has caused a lot of harm to people but how on earth has that gone out. Feels like watching a slow motion car crash and we haven’t got to the end yet.

Difficult to judge this one. Multiple phones and email accounts for 'different people' is a bit strange, but if she does take it to court and she's not innocent as she claims, then it'll be easy to rip her apart!

I have enjoyed it, mainly because my Mum told me about it and said the guy in it reminds her of me.... I've been diagnosed with bi polar since age 18, 30 odd years ago, so it seemed pretty normal to me how he acted and went about his life...
I guess to others he seems odd and a silly decision maker... i mean he is, but they don't make films or TV series about one dimensional people...

I suspect the writer has greatly exaggerated stuff

i.e. I suspect there were emails and calls but some of the more extreme stuff didn't happen.

It is interesting because I think we all accept 'this is based on a true story' can mean anything from its pretty true to its 99% made up BS - but this has had real life consequences.

Conversely, I think the TV series just scratched the surface of what went on...
