Its been decades since i had Sciatica, a nasty bout of flu over one Christmas triggered mine, was walking doubled over for months and don't even ask what the pain is like when you sneeze (like an electric shock from your bum all the way down to one calf), eventually someone suggested Devils Claw supplement, whilst expecting snake oil it worked for me.

Security guard where i worked several years later was in a similar state, he could barely move, suggested he tried the stuff again expecting nothing much, couple of weeks later he's mincing about like a good un.

Doesn't work for everyone, but what have you got to lose trying some, a tenner?

Been in agony for months and the strongest prescription meds don't touch it. Had a scan which revealed a herneated disc L3/L4. Tried chiro, deep tissue massage, excerices but nothing is working.

Anyone had any successful treatments?

Thank you.
What exercises? And who organised the scan and is dealing with the results/onward treatment? Key question is: do your symptoms correlate with the scan result?

I suffered for about 15 years.

Then I found a physio who suggested swimming, especially back stroke. At times I could hardly walk to the pool.

Also one exercise was to lie in my back with legs bent, feet flat on the floor and slowly rock from side to side. I also made some changes to my desk set up.

I've not had a twinge for 20; years.

However, jou might be different. Go and see a physiotherapist.

Once you've read all the replies think very carefully. There's a good chance some of the above could make it a lot lot worse.
I'd echo this. What might help one person could render another permanently incontinent. Rather than rely on well-meant amateur advice, get some professional help.

I had steroid and hydrocortisone injections and was told walking is one of the best treatments to keep it in check.

Motion is lotion, as they say...

Al... if you're ever near uxbridge, I know a fantastic osteo that I've recently been introduced to that is helping my sciatica.

In short, I had an emergency L4/5 op in Nov to save my legs, and had an amazing recovery... until I took a long haul flight in late Feb that threw me back somewhat, leaving me with sciatica troubles down my left leg. This guy in uxbridge has been amazing, and I feel that this next stage of my recovery will result in a much more strong and sustainable fix.

My commiserations, sciatica is a pig.

I was given some exercises to do by a NHS physio, one of which helped a lot.

Lay on you back, knees up, feet flat on the floor.
Elbows out to the side, hands on your middle.
Stabilising your top half with your elbows, lower your knees together gently to one side, up again, then the other side.
Take it slowly, do it a few times feeling your way. Maybe 5 times one way, five times the other way. build up to ten.

And when you're better, which you will be, do the exercise every now and then just to keep your hand in. smile
