Last year I signed up for the Ulys e-toll badge. Very happy with it all so far.

Its been stuck to my windscreen ever since and we are about to depart for France once again.

Ive logged onto my account to check its all ok that end, but is there any way to know before hand that the tag itself still works? How long do they typically last?

Previous tag lasted about 8 years before the battery gave up, new very much smaller style tag has been in about 9 years so far and still worked OK last week. Had my old one exchanged at Senlis tolls near Paris at the Bip'n'go (Sanef) service centre, very fortunate on that occasion as we were on our way down to the Limousin from Calais and the tag stopped working as we got to the first toll so it wasn't really any trouble to call in at the service centre as we were passing.

You can tell when the battery starts to run out as you have to get close to the barrier or wave it out the window for it to work.

Mine lasted 7 or 8 years before it started to appear 'weak' - they suggest ordering a new one after 5 years.

For Emovis it was easy to click 'send me a new tag' to get a new one, you then send the old one back and they refund the deposit you have just paid on the new one, so cost neutral to replace.

Can't you check the battery health on the website?

I can with my Emovis version...

That is just based on age - but better than nothing.

true....Using a red-amber-green status blob, I feel that gives you a decentish enough idea as to whether your time abroad will be successful...
For me, I'd be sending it back the second it hits amber...

I always use a shared toll booth lane for my first attempt after a while. Fortunately that's usually a very quiet stretch of the A88 near Caen.

Typically, these tags have a lifespan of about 5 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer and usage conditions. I would probable give a call to customer service and check with them, just to be sure. If you're traveling by car in Slovakia, make sure you get a vignette https://slovakiavignette.eu. This toll sticker is necessary for using the country's highways and can be bought online or at border crossings.
