CV19 - Cure Worse Than The Disease? (Vol 19)
Discussion
Looks like we have some new converts who are prepared to ignore instructions to mask up this winter because Covid is over. Good on 'em. (It was objectively over once the vulnerable were vaccinated around May 2021...unless of course the vaccine wasn't very good )
They can join in our mirth at Atlanta university (and others) reintroducing mask mandates (and social distancing). Probably a red card offence to mention the US...we are far more cleverer this side of the pond. Aren't we??

Looking at the BBC news (eg) website there are 0 covid articles on the main page for the UK.
ETA: And 0 covid articles on the Sky News main page.
It's in the previous thread. One PHer encountered a load of pensioners masked up in the supermarket who questioned why he wasn't complying. Dismissed by some other contributors as nonsense.Looking at the BBC news (eg) website there are 0 covid articles on the main page for the UK.
ETA: And 0 covid articles on the Sky News main page.
More than one educational establishment in the USA has reintroduced a mask mandate. Ignored by some other contributors.
Unsubstantiated rumours of a rethink of restrictions in the USA as we draw closer to winter (and not just via that Youtuber fella). Lampooned by other contributors.
And that's just within the last couple of weeks.
You can be head-in-the-sand if you want (and I did identify that group in my previous post) but the fact is restrictions and mandates are being talked about as a possibility more and more. But perhaps not on the first page of the BBC UK website.

Also included in the link, study has found that 1 in 5 have long Covid

There has also been a lot of discussion about considering Covid as a virus that we live with in the same way as flu.
Dr Ho is a little wary of that
I'm keen to hear the alternative...?Dr Ho is a little wary of that

Of course COVID is real. Masks, social distancing, and vaccines work.

It’s pretty meaningless to argue something works without defining what you are trying to achieve.
Social distancing reduces person to person contact. So it follows that it should slow the rate of growth of a virus. But what is the purpose of doing that at this stage?
Vaccines work to protect the elderly and vulnerable. But the benefit is negligible for younger people who have already had COVID.
Just because the initial dose of vaccination works, does not mean that it is a good idea to have boosters for ever. If you are trying to reduce risk during first infection then vaccines definitely work, if you are trying to create sterilising immunity then they do not.
As to masks, the evidence suggests that they make “little to no difference” to the risk of infection from influenza like illnesses:

They don’t ‘work’ if that is your objective.

“Many commentators have claimed that a recently-updated Cochrane Review shows that ‘masks don’t work’, which is an inaccurate and misleading interpretation,” Well, that's my contribution for this Volume of Idiot Conspiracy Theorists & The Great Covid Debacle.
From Dr. Karla Soares-Weiser, the editor in chief of the organisation that “commentators” are misquoting.

Medical or surgical masks
Seven studies took place in the community, and two studies in healthcare workers. Compared with wearing no mask, wearing a mask may make little to no difference in how many people caught a flu-like illness (9 studies; 3507 people); and probably makes no difference in how many people have flu confirmed by a laboratory test (6 studies; 3005 people). Unwanted effects were rarely reported, but included discomfort.
N95/P2 respirators
Four studies were in healthcare workers, and one small study was in the community. Compared with wearing medical or surgical masks, wearing N95/P2 respirators probably makes little to no difference in how many people have confirmed flu (5 studies; 8407 people); and may make little to no difference in how many people catch a flu-like illness (5 studies; 8407 people) or respiratory illness (3 studies; 7799 people). Unwanted effects were not well reported; discomfort was mentioned.

But, as usual, you must be a bad conspiracy theorist for daring to question the evidence. Makes him feel better he got to do a factcheck.

I've posted that before and it's an excellent interview with the author of the Cochrane review - annoyingly, it is now for subscribers only, but you can see from how the interview starts - he is not afraid to be honest!

Meanwhile, over to the Guardian and their "Most Viewed" page where story number 1 and 4 clearly show that Covid is not currently in the UK's mainstream media.
Bit sneaky...using a left wing do gooder paper to support your assertion that Covid isn't over. I like your style Although Rollin will retort by using the DM comments on the latest variant to prove that it is over. Hang on, haven't we swapped sides?? Anyways, you piqued my interest. No 4:

If adults or children have Covid-like symptoms, have either a fever or feel unwell, the NHS recommends they try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people. Children with mild symptoms, however, can still be sent to school or childcare if they feel well enough
Our official work directive is "you need to test negative before coming back". An extra weeks (paid - NB you'd have to be really unwell to bother testing, as you lose the first 3 days pay) sick leave? No Biggie...

Well, actually it is very possible to only read and watch what you want to see. It's an increasingly big problem as more and more people live in echo chambers. It's a conscious effort to avoid this, I think. It's a natural human trait to think we're simply 'right' about things and to feel supported by others of the same opinions, and it is uncomfortable to some extent to deal with opposing views and even nuance. That would ensure that your world view is strictly limited to what you want to hear.

Seems there's a lot of it around at the moment, lots of people on my old left-leaning rave site are contracting covid and feeling very sick with it.
Some saying they're getting it for the third and fourth time.
If only they had listened to the government & scientists, and taken the full complement of jabs, worn their masks, taken their vitamins, said their prayers. Some saying they're getting it for the third and fourth time.
Oh. Never mind.
