Most unlikely car for a learner?
Discussion
Probably not the most outlandish around here, but PBJnr3 has been learning in the family jalopy, a VF2 Commodore wagon with a 6.2 V8 and 414bhp…
There are a few Cayennes, Macans and the like to be seen with similar yellow-and-black plates.
As for driving schools, one local school uses a Hyundai i30N…

I see youngesters driving about in Discoveries and Defenders and the like, what are they paying for insurance? My young lad will be on the road when he turns 17 in a few weeks. Learner policy not too bad but once he passes hist test we're looking at £2-3k to insure a 1 litre Peugeot 108. Can't quite work out how they drive these, or what their parents are paying for insurance?

It may actually be cheaper on something more obscure. sherman said:

It may actually be cheaper on something more obscure. Insurance was about 340 for the learner policy and 2600 for a black box full policy with 8000 miles. Should be about half that on renewal.
Road tax was a bh at 345 though.

All depends on where you live, I dare say but my son learnt in his Mk 3 MR2 which is a 1.8 132hp car.

It doesnt suprise me that a new driver insurance was high on a 2 seat 'sports' convertible. Insurance was about 340 for the learner policy and 2600 for a black box full policy with 8000 miles. Should be about half that on renewal.

Back when I was a new driver I bought a brand new ford fiesta. It cost £180 a month but came with 2 years free insurance.
Never seen that deal since.
I reckon I saved £3-4k in insurance costs and got a nice 3 door car.

I actually think that's a great idea. So many kids in London learn to drive in a Fiesta then get given a big SUV by their parents for passing and the new driver has absolutely no spatial awareness in anything bigger than a Fiesta.Round here there's an instructor with an Abarth 595 Yamaha & a Golf GTD and apparently has a long waiting list as all the kids want to learn in them!
