My Copart Specials - BMW 420d & Maserati Gransport
Discussion
yeah, I did a thing... registered on Copart on Monday to help a friend get a certain Panamera but his bid wasn't strong enough.
Started scrolling the auction lists for that day and found this 2019 420d M Sport.
Ended up winning the auction for £7200, after buyers fees and delivery the total came up to £8200.
It looks to me it will be an easy fix, bought a steering wheel for £370, missing interior trims for £60 and Idrive 6 infotainment system for £860, coded to the car's VIN.
Currently waiting for it to be delivered.
Watch this space as this has potential to be somewhat of a bargain, or an expensive lesson .
Hopefully arrives in one piece!!

Following with interest... I had a 20% success rate with Copart purchases... good luck....
Thanks, might need it!Did you get any if them delivered? How long did it take?
Also, I’m aware they move cars around with a forklift, did yours have any undercarriage damage as a result?

My concern would be what has been cut in terms of the wiring. Any idea?
Yes looks like they have cut the wires to the steering quib (behind the steering wheel, presumably to neutralize the airbag) . These are the wires for the stalks, steering wheel controls / heating and airbag. The plug is not in the photos so I sourced a complete front loom for F32 on ebay for 14 quid. Worst case I'll replace the entire loom, best case will remove the plugs w/pigtails off the spare loom and splice them with crimp butt connectors. There is a chance they have also hacked the plugs for the idrive system, but we'll see!
Well, here it is!
Car starts and drives forward/reverse but has a broken tie rod on the left wheel.
Original interior trim was in the boot.
Some Idrive connections were cut, but not the fibre optic ones.
Engine is silky smooth.
No body dents or noticeable marks, the interior is good, battery OK, 2 keys.
Nice!

I actually think the price on co-part was very very low as people bidding may have been aware of the potential of this.
I noticed the car at £5200, it got to £6200 before its turn in the Live Auction. My first bid was at £6900, promptly outbid to £7k, but it took quite a while to reach £7100. I let it run until almost sold to place the 7.2k bid…. Two “bonus time” later, no more bids… “SOLD!” There were 400+ people watching the live auction.interstellar said:
Blimey that was quick. Is it just the idrive screen left to fit?
Still need to do the wiring behind the steering wheel but once I get the tie rod replaced this afternoon it will be “drivable”. (No turn signals and wipers constantly on, might need to pull the fuse in the meantime)beambeam1 said:
This is brilliant, you must be so pleased with yourself so far!
I am actually! It went as well as it could I guess. Also let me give a shoutout to:
https://www.roadtaxmartin.com/
As without him I wouldn’t be able to tax the car. (No V5 was given, had to apply for one)
Martin can tax your car without any documents. In this instance his £60 fee was greatly offset by the fact I could call the AA to replace my tie rod “free of charge” vs the cost of a mobile mechanic. I will also be able to drive the car now, instead of waiting up to 8 weeks for a V5 to be sent to me.

I've seen his services before, how does he do it legitimately if no one else can help?
I have no idea, probably privileged access to some systemI have crimped the wires behind the steering wheel and I have full control of wipers, indicators, steering wheel radio controls etc.
Took it for an alignment yesterday and was told the drivers side tie rod is a bit bent, so will need to replace that before a full alignment.
Getting there!
