76 gross in the Medal (+4 gross and -1 handicap). Beautiful weather, light breeze and 18c by the end.

Played solid and started with 8 pars, loose drive on #10 cost me a shot but really pleased overall and holed our brilliantly. Only missed one putt from <8ft and holed a few decent putts for par. Greens were absolutely pure which helps..

Played with a mate who shot a solid +1 gross
Tidy Round there!! Nicely done

Cheers Andy, lost .3 off the handicap and now down to 4.0.
Pleased to be heading in the right direction as all my handicap cards are comps of White tees (which is a talking point itself)

Hopefully keep the form as I have 5 different Matchplay comps this summer and inter-club scratch league starting in 2 weeks.

Good luck with those, although it sounds like you won't need it!

Excellent scoring well done thumbup

Having said I was looking forward to the medal on Sunday. I predictably didn’t play very well.
My timing felt slightly out and I just wasn’t striking the ball cleanly, apart from the 3 times I flushed an iron and airmailed the green of course.

I found all sorts of iffy lies around the green, with my short game being off too and the pins in tricky positions, I didn’t get up and down enough to save my score.
I made 2 doubles from the middle of the fairway which doesn’t help.

Handicap remains at 6.6 with a 3.1 diff falling off next time. I was hoping to get it closer to 5 having two rounds in good weather over the weekend and feeling like I was starting to play well.

Stupid game.

It really is. Although I scored well on Sunday, I never felt I actually played decently - I've certainly struck the ball better and scored worse. Key for me is driving and putting, get those 2 working well and the scores will come.

FWIW, I got up&down 7 times on Sunday. Take some of those away and it's an average score at best.

I shot +7 through 9 the other day (where my handicap for that 9 was +8) and I felt like, for once, I was swinging my range swing. Everything felt so nice and steady, and my chipping was pretty good too. Just means that next time out I'll be rubbish again!

Nice, it's great when that happens. I've been working at the range on taking a club more and swinging smoother taking my ego out of the game. Just need to take it on the course now.

We have the greenkeepers cup on Saturday with easy, hard and crazy pin positions so I just need to try and go for the middle of the green from wherever I am rather than thinking I am a single figure handicapper who can go for the flag.

I think it's one of the advantages of turning up and playing without much of a warmup - I took 7i off the first tee and just swung smoothly (would normally take 5i on that hole). The shot was arrow straight, didn't lose any distance really compared to a full swing (about 5 yards) and it just put me in a good mood all the way around. Need to bear that in mind for future - let the club do the work.

Sounds nice and positive.

As much as I advocate hitting driver as much as possible, a 7 iron off the tee on your 1st is not a bad play if you hit it long enough to clear the ditch. I’m happy to get to the 2nd tee without having lost a ball on the 1st biglaugh

Ah, this wasn't at Bar Hill. The first hole at this course is 250 with a bunker just short. OB right. Driver is out and I don't fancy a 3w first shot of the day, so it's usually a 5 iron for a 50-60y pitch.

Went out for 9 yesterday and sadly confirmed my suspicion - I have completely forgotten how to putt. Was ok for the first few holes, then hit 6 in GIR only to 3 putt, had a 2 footer for par on 7 that I missed (a few times) then hit the Par 5 8th in 2 - with a lovely hybrid from 230 yards away - then 3 putted. Also failed to get up and down on 9, missing a 5 footer.

Still played to my handicap (5 over) so tee to green was spot on.

Spoke to the guy I was playing with on Saturday and he mentioned my putting stroke looked very short and I wasn't really hitting my lines properly. Or reading the greens very well.

So just a few things to work on smile

I can be quite a good putter but my putting ability tends to creep away from me over time as I make small adjustments each time I go out......it usally then gets reset when somebody says to me, "why are you doing x when you are putting?" And then I realise that it has got away from me again.

My usual ones are gripping further down and down, or left elbow increasingly bent, or standing miles away, or some other odd looking thing that I havent noticed as it has just been a gradual change over a few months....

I keep saying to myself that I should try and use the indoor puttout matt a bit more but I very rarely do....

Still, sounds like you did the right thing. And I stand by my point about your 1st hole biggrin

Pairs Matchplay last night (betterball) in glorious conditions, 20c and very little wind.

We were giving away 8 and 13 shots. We both played pretty well and dovetailed nicely to win the match 4&3.
I only have the singles scratch Matchplay round 1 left to play now which is nice, playing a chap off 3 so I'll get 1 shot - should be a good game..
