Thanks for reminding me - I was wondering what to BBQ in the near future - I have a master stock in the freezer. Long marinade then a low'n'slow - did it last year and it worked well.

I'm trying to buy one of these for my father - he loves mine. Any idea where to get advance notice of a new batch?

Google the Aldi kamado and then subscribe for updates.

Aren't there plenty of other cheap kamados about though? For example: https://www.wowcher.co.uk/deal/shop/garden/bbq-pic...

My Aldi kamado is still tremendously good but for anyone looking to get into the style and finding Aldi have sold out again, I’ve just spotted this link. Seems a great deal for an actual KJ:

That's a 'Kettle Joe'. Essentially a Joe shaped Weber

Kamado Joe 'Classic' Ceramic is on the same site at £809. That's a pretty fair price when it includes the accessories and compare with a Big Green Egg. I think it's about what I paid for mine ten years ago. In ten years you are likely to need spares like gaskets ceramic rings and fireboxes so I think getting something with the back up of a reasonably big player might justify the extra over the Asda bargain.

I’d agree with that. My Monolith is coming up 6 years old and I’ve had to replace (and upgrade to a better design, so shouldn’t break again) the firebox and replace the gasket twice. A half moon deflector stone cracked for no apparent reason the other day too. I’ve also had to replace the bamboo handle and worktops, but mainly because I haven’t been diligent enough using the cover.

The new monolith design has a metal gasket that doesn’t look to be a consumable. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be a retrofit item. I’ve upgraded all the other internal parts like the grills and ash collector etc. It’s a real Trigger’s broom now!

1. Ah yes, missed that it was the kettle. The actual proper KJ at £800 seems like a bargain compared to the £1800 it was at 2 years ago.
2. Yes, I’d have preferred a BGE or a KJ for the long-term backup but the disparity in cost vs the Aldi @ £400 was just too much when stepping into the unknown from my previous gas barbecues.
3. I had the same - firebox and deflector both cracked despite being fired gently, used appropriately 20 times and never subject to rough treatment, frost or soaking when cleaning. Aldi were good about replacing them (this time).
4. My woodwork is looking weather stained but the cover’s so difficult in the UK. Clearly you can’t put it on until it’s all cooled but these damn things can still be warm for 15 hours, even with the vents closed and it’s guaranteed to rain overnight. Once it’s been raining, I don’t want to cover it while it’s wet. I’ll just replace the wood smile
I still bloody love my aldi kamado!

I hadn’t thought of claiming anything on a warranty. It’s not exactly been wrapped in cotton wool and we have more extremes of hot and cold weather in Switzerland, so I’ve just treated any new parts as consumables or upgrades!

Yeah, I’m not particularly a warranty claimant either if something’s given me fair use but the main worry I have is how long I’ll be able to source (claim or purchase) spares to fit the Aldi one. That would have been the only major plus in my mind of paying for the premium brands. Still, I’m planning to run my bargain egg until it can’t be fixed. Hopefully the rotisserie I eventually succumb to will fit on the next red or green version smile

I suspect Joe or BGE parts would fit into the 'egg' of an Aldi kamado.

I guess compatibility issues might arise in relation to whether the ash collector, pan and lower vent for the Aldi kamado will fit with the firebox from a Joe or a BGE. The firebox on my Joe is cracked into many pieces and gasket is shot without affecting function too much. All on my to do list.
