Lando doesn't even have GCSEs and has far more interesting things to do with his time and money than worry about this stuff.
I didn't know that about Lando. I left school ahead of GCSE's myself, honestly never held me back in the least!

Really? Why not?
Because his dad is stinking rich.

Lando wanted to race and never had a need to acquire academic qualifications.

I'm surprised, I didn't know it was even possible to leave school these days having not done the exams.

Or did Lando fail all his GCSEs?

Are you sure about this? That's VERY eccentric parenting, if true!

Dunno about Lando. I simply refused to go from around 14 years of age. I went back for the occasional stint to stop social services getting too heavy handed. I left entirely when I was 15 and they realised by the time they made effective enforcement action stick, I'd be close to legal leaving age anyway.

It just wasn't for me smile

Apparently he left school at 14 and never sat his exams, although he still had a private tutor until 16.

His dad is said to be worth around £200m.

Loved the Sky TV “ghost” car footage. Hope to see a lot more of that.

I was pleased like many others to see Lando get the win finally. He and his car seemed to be the class of the field for much of the race and the win was well-deserved. One thing it did highlight for me, watching the Sky broadcast over in North America, is how quickly they pivoted from the fairly objective commentary they provided over the last couple years of Max dominance, back to the home side cheerleading they did in prior years for Lewis and resumed yesterday for Lando. I tended to overlook the fact that we were getting a U.K. broadcast when Max was winning everything and the U.k. drivers were generally mid-pack as Sky had very little to cheer for. They made up for that in spades yesterday and while I understand it, I found it a bit jarring. It must be a difficult balance to try for. I think Sky does a fine job overall and unlike a number who post here, I quite enjoy most of their on-air personalities with just a couple of exceptions.

Makes sense. He obviously found a reasonably well paid career anyway rofl

And of course, him and his Dad knew long before he was 14 that his talent and future career simply didn't require qualifications.

Dare we dream and get back to a poll on who will win for the next race PIAP???

Fantastic for Lando, and the first race I've watched live (on the telly) this year... might have to watch a few more now

Not sure if I missed it in-between all the triggered posts and tears about a democratically elected former president visiting a garage in his home state.

But

Sainz 5 second penalty for his red mist overtake damaging Piastri's car and ruining his race.

Kmag is now on 10 penalty points after his crash into Sargent.
Lewis had to keep within 5 seconds of sainz as he was under investigation yet dropped nearly a second on the last lap which was either poor from Lewis or more likely poor communication from the team.
With so many post race penalty's these days it pays to keep close at the end

But the question was more about whether it was a good idea for sports stars to be so single minded in their pursuit of success that they are ill aware of the world around them, and so should be excused for making gauche comments?

It’s about education not qualifications.

I doubt his leaving school at 14 is a factor in terms of his comments or how aware he is of the wider world.

As I've said, a left school at the same age and I'm well aware that Trumps a total wker.

It’s quite funny seeing the post race comments on Lando’s win, everyone is happy. I’d imagine if it had been a Lewis/Max race like this we’d be on page 200 with the discussions on the safety car picking up the second place driver, instead it’s forgotten in all the celebrations of his win/someone else finally winning.

Even Fred got a bit carried away!

I was born in Wales and lived almost my entire life in Scotland with family from way back many generations. Yes, you’d be silly to sing God Save the King, but it still doesn’t mean that it’s not the official anthem. Have a quick google.

A total waste of his time no doubt.

GCSEs are for those of us who require PAYE status and even then they're not a necessity.

Standard penalty is 10 seconds but that would have promoted Lewis as well, 5 seconds just promotes a Red Bull...
Seems fair.

It looked a dodgy manoeuvre at the time but I think if the damage to Piastri's car was minimal, say an end fence only he might have got away with it.

The fact it was more serious damage promoted him to a 5s penalty.

Wonder if Ham was aware and just cooked up or if there was nothing he could do. He was within a second of Perez for what? 15 laps? That must have caused extra wear on his tyres.

Lewis spent most of the race within a second, and often within 0.5 seconds of the car in front. It was surprising his tyres lasted so well. The Mercedes had no chance of passing the Red Bull on the straights, even with DRS, so was stuck, his pace was faster than Perez, but was stuck there. Had he passed, he would have pulled away.

I think my mind was made up when I clashed with a teacher over pointlessness of learning any form of maths beyond the basic - because we all have a calculator.

"But what if you're at work one day and you don't have a calculator"

Wtf!? If I was at work one day and I informed my client that the project was delayed because I didn't have a calculator to hand, they'd say "get a fking calculator", they wouldn't ask why I don't just do it all with the aid of long multiplication.

As it is I engineer giant water tanks for film and TV, I know exactly what I'm doing and I pay a structural engineer a few quid every now and again to tell me I'm right and to keep my clients happy. I've never had one of my design solutions disproved.

I'm willing to bet most of my fellow classmates that hung around to learn about algebra don't even really understand how VAT works, despite paying it every day of their lives. But teach em algebra right..? Just 'because'.

If you've got ideas that go beyond what the school are teaching you, leave.

That’s a very narrow view of what education is.

Do you not think that school teaches kids things beyond what they need to earn a living, or that it should?
