50mph is safer still. That's speedo reading of course biggrin

Actually safety threshold occurs at 30mph (<50g accident criterion). Over 30mph and things get dodgy.
you've done a speed awareness course too?
No I haven't despite running the gauntlet for many years biggrin

But I can construct a valid case for limiting cars to 30 mph max everywhere. Unusually it would be a speed limit based on sound logic even if effing stupid in reality hehe

Well, the mystery is over! I've just seen a facebook post from Wiltshire police, sending a motorway middle lane hogger on a drivers awareness course and the comments are "enlightening" as all the actual MLMs are speaking up.

Their excuses consistently boil down to Lane 1 being "unsafe"

1) Lane 1 is not "safe" due to lorry indentations - one driver claims he can't keep the car in a straight line....
2) Lane 1 is not safe due to pot holes.....
3) Lane 1 is not safe due to smart motorways
4) One woman declared she sits in Lane 2 as it gives her the widest view of the road ahead (like motorways are not already bloody wide enough!) and she can be better prepared if any animals jump out from the bushes......

They are ALL claiming its "safer" (with a handful of old blokes claiming they are protecting their tyres and suspension).

Oh , almost forgot one gem, "I can't pull out to overtake into lane 3 as everying is zooming past at 80-90"

So in response to the OP, yes, they do notice, they are just convinced they are in the right.

Indeed, I’ve done the A1 Milan to Modena (on a trip from Baden Baden to Ancona) only in lane 1 at 140/150kph, while lane 3/4 is traffic chaos (at 140/150kph +) with straddling the lanes and using lane 2 for undertakes..

MLM are everywhere..

Definitely got worse in the last five years. They were all on the M40 on Saturday morning.

About 30-40% of drivers in the wrong lane. Often lane three.

They know exactly what they are doing but think they are in the right.

Then you get other militant drivers who go to the other extreme and try and teach them a lesson.

Makes motorway driving far more stressful than it used to be.

Another thing that used to work and has now become polarised.

One told me she preferred the middle lane as it gave her more room for uncontrolled swerving in the event of a blowout.

Saturday, A3 as the slip from the M25 becomes L1 of the A3 it's all 50 limits and average cameras due to the restructuring of jct.10.

Saturday I've just gone over the M25 heading north, it's all 50 limits and average cameras due to the restructuring of jct.10, I need to take Painshill which is the next A3 exit, to my left is the M25 to A3 slip this becomes L1 of the A3, a red fiesta is to my left, just coming off the M25 to the A3, I'm going slightly quicker, I pull into L1 ahead of the Fiesta as I'm wanting to take the next exit, Fiesta indicates and moves to L2 and stays there, L1 is practically empty, there was absolutely no reason to move to L2, they are still there behind me until I can no longer see them!

At this same spot I've seen people doing exactly what the Fiesta did and then pull back into L1 to take that junction of the A3, it is totally baffling.

It's the only explanation that ever fitted. Also most of their answers will be downright lies anyway. They sit in the middle because that's where they're the comfiest and they couldn't give a fk how inconvenient it is to other motorists.

I think this has to be it. They just sit tight and let everyone else deal with it.

If it’s all 50 limits what does it matter?

We are being trained this behaviour is ok (by av speed cameras) so not sure what anyone expects really. I go round the north circ which is 40 limit av speed cameras and it creates dangerous events where you can’t get off (an exit) because you’ve a whole mass of people travelling identical speed and you can’t slot in to move to the left for sometimes very large distances. It’s ok though as av speed cameras are making life safer

To be fair I use the M3 between J2 and J4a most weeks and now it has become a "Smart" motorway Lane 1 is full of drain covers which will no doubt sink and create potholes long before they get repaired!

Plus Lane 1 becomes the exit slip road at each junction so I can see why some people just get into Lane 2 if they are planning to stay on the M3. But that's one of the issues with roads like that, there are only ever 3 lanes through the junctions.

At least we're all set to get a couple of years of 50mph misery while they build the emergency reservations they didn't build in the 3+ years of misery inflicted on us when they made it "Smart". furious

Is it me or are taxi drivers particularly bad for this? I'm pretty militant with them and will quite happily come up behind them in the middle lane and give them a flash- got two of them in the space of about 2 minutes a couple of weeks ago on the M5- and they do normally move over with no hassle but it does beg the question why they're cruising along in the wrong lane.

You've been lucky!

Anywhere near the M25 the private hire Priuses all cruise along in the wrong lane and never move to their left until they want to get off the Motorway. redface

So, they're thick.
At least I feel marginally better about undertaking (~20%) and the occassional hoot (~1%).

Is there not a Starbucks, or something similar, along that stretch of the A3 with a very short exit slip road, so perhaps peeople wishing to avoid conflict.

I’ve always given them the benefit of the doubt that they’re just st drivers but no, apparently it’s often deliberate.

The mind boggles.

It closed when the works started about a year ago, anyway stop trying to excuse the bahaviour, this sort of thing goes on everywhere, it happens on the opposite side going southbound, Surrey Police even tweeted catching a woman doing it a couple of years back, you can see her moving straight to L2 as she enters the A3 and then sitting there, this was before the works started, it is just a thing for some people.
