This.

Back in the day, pub discussions were: “Red Top or Rover V8?”

Argue until hazy.

My Brother went with the Red Top option.

Blimey £30k for a Manta GT/E hatchback! Over the years, I paid only two grand more than that for a Subaru 22B, Renault 5 Turbo 2 and Delta Integrale 16v combined! All were mint low milers too.

My dad had a couple of those brand new in the 1980s
Both black ones, he had Capris before that.
He passed away in 1996, I recall we sold his last one for about £1500!

These must have been more than £6k in 1987?

An XR2 was about £8k and a basic Escort around £6k

I do recall they were the same price as an Astra SRi, as a colleague spent a long time choosing between them, ultimately getting the Astra.
£6,700 for the entry level, £7,800 for the GT/E hatch as here

Mine was like that, rust was a problem though. The guy that bought it off me did some wild modifications to it which was a shame as it was largely standard.

You just don’t see them any more, even if you wanted to buy one. They seem to have fared much worse than the Capri’s, XRs, Renault 5 GTs from the era.

Lovely car - I wasn’t expecting £30k though ??
I’ve always known they’d shoot up in price from sub 10k a few years back

Prefer the coupe but in some ways the hatch is handy if you want to take your bike to the Welsh forests and enjoy the drive there and back too in something retro

I had an E-reg gunmetal hatch. Big lump of an engine, went well in a straight line but a bit hefty/agricultural in the twisties. Lovely velvet plush seats, sunroof; lots of happy memories, including continental holidays. Traded it in for a sensible Citroën when our firstborn came along...

Theu go VERY well with the 3.0 24v straight six from the Carlton or Senator!
I wouldn't imagine they'd handle very well with one of those fitted, both the 12v & 24v were boat anchors.

This is an exact twin of the one I did 110,000 miles on in the early-mid 1990s... it was a 1987 on an E plate, three or four years old when I got it, and I gradually upgraded it with Billies, an Ansa exhaust, four-pot calipers and big brakes, a quick rack (which made the steering very heavy when parking, but was perfect on the move) and a 2.2 Carlton engine with a Bill Blydenstein head. And upgraded the lights with separate wiring straight off the battery and a relay to operate them.

It was lukewarm but good transport when I bought it, but when I got it into its final form it was for the time pretty quick and had really excellent handling of the old school, over the moors and also on the dual-carriageway roundabouts. It was a lot of fun and served me well over about five years of all-weather, all-purpose motoring
That makes triplets then!
I had this exact model and colour, C reg. I bought it new having sold my Sunbeam Ti for a good price.
Had the Manta for 9 years and 90k. Sold it due to first born coming along and also because it was rusting really badly, sills and inner wings. Superficially looked ok still. Only mods were the irmsher quad headlights and a sports exhaust.
Despite the 110bhp it felt quick for the time. Remember the back stepping out a speed due to a mid turn bump (live axel), but some 'oppo had it collected up thankfully. I put it down to the decent handling rather than any skill from myself.
It was probably nostalgic memories of the Manta behind the reason for the GT86 acquisition, a lot of similarities, and in black too biggrin
I had the coupe and it was a great cruiser with the 110bhp - 122flat out and still managed to be hot hatch fast despite the long gearing of what was effectively a 4+E box ( Getrag ). Mine went to 2.2 at first for 40k miles ( roughly 140bhp with head and exhaust mods ) but then I got used to it and went for 2.4 which made it 160-170bhp and very quick ( as in a 325 Sport I had after felt quite sluggish ….. largely as it weighed 20% more with the same power )
Handled really well with the HS2300 Chevette Bilsteins up front, quick rack and a LSD plus the twin pot earlier calipers plus a few other mods.
Waxoyled it to death and it went to Ireland when they hoovered up all the cheap rwd cars from over here in the mid 90s

If I was modding one again I’d definitely have the 2.0XE in it straight out the Astra GTE 16v - 160bhp out the box on a standard engine - GR86 performance almost in such a light car

Yes, rust and the hassle of welding up rusty holes every MOT was the reason my Brother sold it, i might be wrong but the bloke he sold it to only wanted the Red Top for a kit car.

FIND ANOTHER!

My best friend's older brother got a white coupe version of one of these for his 17th birthday present so I automatically thought that both he and it were the coolest things ever.

Personally I can't see what's special enough about this hatch to merit the 30k price but I'm sure it's value for a very particular type of buyer.

Funnily enough saw one with just this engine swap at the village carnival yesterday. Fitted the engine bay really neatly and sounded suitably burbly through largish exhaust

What a lovely example, but £30k does seems a lot, mind you what isn’t?
Back in the day I thought these were great cool looking cars, not to mention the Monza GSE which blew my mind.
Strangely enough I was at my local Vauxhall dealer just a few days ago having a look around for something interesting. The place was jam packed with brand new cars but nothing and I mean nothing fired me up.

I think I'd probably just about prefer the booted coupe if pushed but, regardless, that's a very lovely thing.

Think I'll be hanging on to my 1988 GSi here in France then going to be worth my than I thought and not before time as superior to a Ford Escort.

How did they arrive at £30K?. I assume true trade value x 1.5 to see if they can get away with it off the unicorn buyer.
