I'm loving all these suggestions people. Massively appreciated.

Buuuuut. The pull to a series Land Rover is strong. A 88' in blue with the windscreen down and roof off? Channel a bit of Bond in Jamaica... hahaha

Abarth 500, not the best car in the world, but somehow it just works and is loads of fun. Would be great buzzing around the new forest.
See... this was the original plan. I spent the tail end of last year overseas and for some reason was fantasising about having a yellow Abarth 595 Comp for fun... but when you look at the price of them compared to what you could buy? Hmmmmmmm
I loved mine, was great fun. Much preferred driving it to faster more sorted cars. I could have bought much faster or better handling cars, but glad I didn't.

If you're only doing short trips these things are brilliant. I've had mine since 2008 and can't quite bring myself to sell it as it's so useful. It's been a mobile skip during house renovations, dog transport for our Lab and a general local runaround.

I fitted a 200tdi to it when the engine died just after I got it and last week the noisy gearbox cried enough and it's now languishing while I decide whether I want to fit an LT77 or fix what's in there. If you're happy to work on one and don't want to go far they're highly recommended

Brilliant, that's what I've been told - a bit of mechanical sympathy and spannering here and there. An ongoing project as it were. Yeah I'm really keen for it.

Are they commercial vehicles on the v5? Wondering if the odd tip-run in the summer will be doable

Tip runs have been fine, although there are some odd rules at my local one - if I turn up with the canvas off they say that it's a pick up and needs a permit. If the roof is on then they're fine with it!

I tend to run it with the canvas on and the back and sides rolled up, so not a big deal, just odd.

If you do get one just make very sure that the chassis and bulkhead are sound unless you want to do a full rebuild - everything else is relatively easy

R53 Mini Cooper S JCW would be my choice, should get quite a good one for the budget and the supercharger whine is addictive

Hi all. I'll keep it simple.

Sold one of my motorbikes. I have ~£6k to play with and I'm looking for something fun to drive.

Some thoughts I had:
BMW Z3 (2.8 ideally?) - or Z4?
Pug 106 Rallye.
Land Rover Series II/III,
'classic' mini (pre BMW)
Porsche Boxster.
Go older - MGB etc

Thoughts? What have I overlooked? What should I look out for?

Context - it'll just be me in the car and all it needs to do is put a smile on my face. I have other options for practical / long distance / high speed requirements! My most regular fun drive is to the gym and back (20 mins), and I love driving around the New Forest in the evening rather than endlessly watching Netflix...

Thank you in advance!

Having recently swapped from a 986 S Boxster into a GT86, what I notice more than anything is the bandwidth the Boxster has. If the OP was after a "1 car fits all" solution (and the Boxster was big enough for his carrying needs) then I'd recommend him one in a heartbeat. It does everything well. Maybe not the best in any one category (including fun) but covers a lot of bases with one car.

The GT86 that's replaced it is much more raw and (in my opinion) fun ... but it does grate a little as a daily (or maybe I'm getting old! smile ).

If I were the OP, I'd be going as small and light as possible ... with whatever driven wheels the OP enjoys most. The added bonus being that the smaller and lighter it is, the more likely his is to be having fun at speeds that are less likely to land him in trouble.

It's crazy how little £6k gets you these days ... 14 years ago I bought a 10 year old M5 for £6k!

A massive thank you to everybody who posted, in the end I went for a locally restored 1959 series 2 and I am very happy. I will make a few tweaks - such as a canvas top and put the spare wheel on the bonnet…

It ticks a lot of my boxes and means I can crack on with some garden plans this summer (and go buy random tat on FB marketplace that wouldn't fit in my other cars)
