Hoping someone can offer some advice, please!

A couple of years ago I bought a car that’s a US import. It’s been in the country since about 2008 but when it was imported the DVLA recorded it as having a manual gearbox when actually it’s an auto (sadly!). I can tell from the options codes that it left the factory as an auto so it’s not that it was converted to one at a later date, but anyway, point is, the DVLA says it’s something which it isn’t.

Does anyone have any experience of contacting them and asking them to update their records, please? Ultimately it doesn’t make a lot of difference most of the time but it is a pain with insurance renewals trying to tell them that the car isn’t what their database is expecting! I imagine even after the DVLA update things (if they will?), it may take time to propagate through to other places but if it’s possible to get things corrected, it seems like it would be a good thing to do.

Many thanks beer

Option 2.

It was the mis-reading of a 'S' for '5' in my case and the car was inspected before the correction was made.

I've imported and exported a few cars and whenever I've phoned DVLA they have been very helpful. Call them.

Some time last year I noticed that on the DVLA MOT Status checker page, my car correctly came up as being petrol-engined, but on the MOT History checker page, it said it was diesel.

I sent them an email plus a scan of the relevant page on the V5 showing that it ran on petrol, and they corrected it in about 10 days.

As an update to this, I contacted the DVLA and they claimed they “don’t record vehicle transmission” and that I should be speaking with my insurance company… but that doesn’t help get the vehicle’s details updated on whatever database the insurers and price comparison sites use when they bring up a car’s details once you type in the registration.

Should I mail them a covering letter (possibly with the V5 attached, even though it doesn’t say manual or auto on it) instead of relying on the opinion of someone on a help desk? headache
