And with these words so ended the Iranian Embassy siege 44 years ago today

A handful of SAS soldiers stormed the balcony live on television as an enthralled nation watched

The feat I think still remains quite remarkable even today

Problem was not to leave the embassy. One escaped and was arrested....there were not supposed to be any arrests

As Gecko has said, my understanding is that Maggie spoke to the Sarge directly on the telephone and gave one clear instruction, none were to walk away. I believe there is some footage of the only survivor (he hid in amongst the hostages) outside in the garden and you see a trooper drag him and level a weapon to um, wrap things up completely... But another trooper stops him and points out the cameras are watching.....................

Wouldn't happen today. They'd not cut to the SAS until every last, excruciating, snore inducing, shot was taken and the "best of 67 frames" winner had been declared!

No sport should EVER be shown live if there is not a definitive start and end time laugh Make Snooker matches no longer than 2 hours! You might actually replace the audience with people who have to go to work in the morning...

I was at home watching a John Wayne film, on the balcony at the front of the embassy as well as absailing down the back of the embassy all at the same time.

Twice!

My father's colleague was there, on the inside. Watching it shortly after my dad came back from work was quite something.
