Hi All,

Our dog has been suffering with diarrhoea for a few days now.

The vet has given him pro-kolin, which is a gastrointestinal treatment and feeding him chicken and rice, but nothing seems to be firming up his stools. He's also going to toilet at an increased frequency, compared to normal.

The thing is, he is absolutely fine in all other ways, still eating and drinking as normal and begging at meal times! Still wanting to go on his walks and no difference in his behaviour whatsoever, no increased sleeping, or vomiting or lethargy.

I wondered if anyone else had seen something similar in their dog and it cleared up on it's own, or they can recommend something that might help. Or whether we need to go back to the vets.

We're going away on a long distance walking holiday soon with him and we want to obviously get this cleared up for him.

There haven't been any changes in his diet or enviornment to bring this on, so we're a bit stumped.

Any help appreciated!

Back when I first owned dogs (30+ years ago) starvation for 12-24 hours was often recommended for dogs with an upset stomach.

We sometimes still take this approach for our dogs now, depending on how they seem.

The other thing might be to try something other than chicken and rice. Chicken doesn't suit one of our dogs; she's better on white fish. Or you could try scrambled egg.

But if in doubt, definitely get back to the vets. Hope you can get him sorted.

Feeding nothing Pasta for a few meals often works when ours have the trots.

Our little guy occasionally had diarrhea/loose stools. We give him a daily dose of probiotics in his food and, although the situation improved significantly, he would still have the odd, unexpected dose of the runs. What eventually solved it was an accidental change of food. We feed him a 50:50 mix of Royal Canin and Solubrious. The Solubrious we initially gave him was chicken based and he absolutely loved it. However, the place we bought it from ran out of the chicken variety, so we had to try him on the lamb version. We were really concerned that this would trigger his digestive issues, but fortunately, it did quite the opposite. Stools lovely and firm, very easy to pick up and, more importantly, he likes it more than the chicken version.
Hope you get it sorted OP.
