One certainly couldn't accuse Aston of slacking off recently. Just this year there's been a
Vantage GT8
manual V12 S
DB11
. Those in addition to the track specials seen in 2015.
The frantic pace isn't slowing either, with official spy shots (since when did they become a thing?) of the DB11 Volante 'leaked' by Aston Martin. Despite the rather odd context of being provided prototype test images by a manufacturer, who's going to turn down the chance at seeing the next drop-top Aston?
Predictably there's not an awful lot to discuss thus far, the pictures only covering the side and rear of the car. What we can see though is a fabric roof - like a Bentley GTC but of course unlike a Mercedes SL - and many familiar cues from the coupe (the strakes behind the front wheels, the wheels, the rear design). However, the strange cladding around the rear arches suggests Aston is attempting a slightly different look to that achieved with the coupe where the roof meets the rear of the car. With no C-pillars to draw air through the boot lid it'll be interesting to see how Aston Martin achieves the clever 'Aeroblade' integrated drag reduction system seen on the coupe - perhaps this conceals some different form venting to achieve the same ends.
It seems likely that the Volante will carry over the same powertrain as the coupe, with the open air of course all the better for hearing that 608hp twin-turbo V12. Expect plenty more on this latest Aston as that spring 2018 debut date approaches.
