65 Ford Mustang 302 Restomod 5 Speed
This stunning Classic Mustang finished in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White Shelby stripes, left Fords Dearborn Plant in 1965. It is an original “C Code Coupe ” which means that it was a V8 in standard form when it was built. This Mustang is the finished product of a father and son team Greg & Daniel Weidel who live in San Jose, California.
The City of San Jose is the economic, cultural, and political centre of Silicon Valley. It’s the largest city in Northern California and one time home to one of Fords Mustang Manufacturing plant. Located in the centre of the Santa Clara Valley, on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay.
Greg explained that they had purchased the Mustang intending to complete the restoration started by the previous owner Mr Eamon Bacos who had spent thousands of dollars but unfortunately didn’t have the time or the finances to finish his project. Greg said that this project had been something to occupy their minds as they had lost Greg’s other son and brother of Daniel, who had been killed in action with the 101st Airborne some years earlier in Afghanistan. This Mustang had become a focus of their joint passion for older machinery and also a tribute to his son who had always loved the early Mustangs.
As you can see this 65 Mustang Muscle Car turned out incredibly well, so much so that Daniel and Greg became emotionally attached to the car and without the need for funds to further Daniels education would undoubtedly never have parted with it.
This Mustang has been built as a real drivers car, the freshly built 302 is designed to safely rev higher than the stock 302 and is coupled to the R spec Tremec TKO 5 Speed Transmission, (a series developed with straighter cut gears to deal with higher brake horsepower)and the new 3.90 Positrac Rear End putting the power onto the road this car is an incredible drive. Under the bonnet is exceptional with Edelbrock chrome air filter, Ford racing chrome rocker covers, chrome Monte Carlo brace, Upgraded top suspension mount brace, Chrome serpentine pulleys and alternator, MSD Electronic ignition, power steering, triple-core aluminium radiator with larger fan and many other upgrades. The engine bay could when prizes on its own!
This superb performance is more than matched with the front and back Wilwood Disc Brake set up and much stiffer uprated Tubular Front Suspension which allows this Muscle Car to handle equally well and the overall driving experience is fantastic.
So much care and attention was given to the very solid body shell during the restoration that this is one of the straightest Classic Mustangs you will find, the panel gaps are even throughout and fit exceptionally well. The paintwork finish is exceptional throughout. The “Mustang” 5 spoke black wheels with 17 “ Tyres give it that stocky stance. It also has the Boot mounted Shelby Spoiler which increases the drama and the Classic Shelby style Wimbledon White Stripes just add the final touch. Inside the cockpit of this very special Mustang, all is new, from headlining, door rubbers, dashboard, seats, carpets, dials, new GT style Rev Counter with a further three more gauges underneath Oil, Water and Volts, sun visors, centre armrest, retro chrome radio and the chrome and black Mustang wheel allow for a very comfortable driving atmosphere for driver and guests.
All the extra features fitted to this Pony have produced a fast road-going Mustang reminiscent of the track. The sound of a race car coming from the Flat Tappet Cam & R Spec gear sets just add to the fun!
We had a little time to kill and Greg was very hospitable and showed us his collection of cars and motorcycles that were stored at his home many of which he had restored, he had just completed a hand-built Sand Rail with 400 HP turbocharged motor and enormous suspension travel which allows for high-speed driving across the undulating dunes that can be found in Southern California. It was a work of art and beautifully crafted. This same attention to detail Greg and Daniel had applied to the Mustang.
This Mustang is extremely well prepared Classic if you are looking for a “turn and go” Mustang which has had everything restored at someone else’s huge expense then this is possibly it. This is a driver’s car which would possibly win any show it would be entered into and would also be a joy to drive.
