Leaving the production line in October 1963 finished as a left-hand drive coupe, this E-type was shipped and arrived at Jaguar Cars, New York offered for sale later that year. It was Summer 1964 when the E-type entered into its first ownership under the name G,S. Herscher of Charleston, W.VA, recorded by the original supplied Jaguar Cars LTD Coventry Manufactures Warranty. The E-type remained in the states for the majority of its life, recording another sale from the Beverly Hills Car Club to a Mr Harwood in August 1975, North Carolina.
Autumn 2015 welcomed the E-type back to its country of manufacture and into the ownership of its current custodian. Arriving on UK soil finished with Black exterior, in what was recorded as “project car” condition by the shipping company. It is understood the E-type was run sparingly since its import, ensuring the car remained in good running condition, treating the E-type to a new clutch, fuel tank and cooling system to name just a few.
Continuing to reside in the rural setting of Lechlade-on-Thames, Gloucestershire, the E-type was handed to a local classic car specialist for restoration, returning this 3.8 example back to heritage correct condition.
Starting it restoration in December 2017, the Coupe received a full exterior and interior strip revealing areas of corrosion, taking this opportunity, the E-type underwent fitment of a new n/s floor section, repaired wings, quarter panels, further floor sections, footwells, engine mounts and bonnet inner panels. Once the chassis was structurally sound again the E-type was finished off with anti-rust prevention primer to ensure many more years of reliable motoring.
Leading up to the end of its restoration the E-type was finished in its 1963 heritage correct Opalescent Gunmetal and refitted with original replated exterior brightwork. Ensuring not to leave out the interior, the car was retrimmed and fitted with new carpets, sill vinyl’s, headliner, console and dash. To retain the classic drive of this early 1960’s icon, the running was left in mostly original condition with the exception of a modern cooling fan for reliability. It is understood that during this restoration the E-type was also converted from USA left-hand drive to right-hand drive for comfortable UK driving. The E-type is accompanied by a detailed history file featuring original manufacture document, restoration estimates, part and work invoices.
Today the E-type can be seen in stunning condition, having covered no more than 850 miles since it import, finished in a well maintained attractive and period-correct Gunmetal, featuring brightwork retaining its restoration shine with minimal road pitting. The Red leather trim continues to impress as you place yourself behind a period correct 3 spoke steering wheel. Insert the key, press the ignition and the original 3.8l XK engines fires up immediately, running in mostly untouched condition. Selecting your gear through what is believed to be the matching numbers 4-speed manual moss box, this '63 classic is swept along the road, offering a true representation of what it was like to drive one of these industry marvels in the 1960s.
