Finished in its designated colour of Misano Red, this M3 Evolution 2 glistens as if it had just rolled off the production line. Condition excellent; after being subject to full rotisserie restoration spanning from 2013 – 2016 the bodywork sits free from any rust or fading that plagues less well maintained examples.
1 of just 3 colours available for the Evo 2, the vibrant shade of red perfectly captures the wide boxy arches and wing of the M3 to create what is arguably one of the most iconic silhouettes of all time.
Attention to detail really sets this car apart; with all exterior trim retaining a deep black lustre and even the period correct stickers still adhered to the 3mm lightweight rear windows, its clear that this was a restoration of the highest and most detailed standard.
This M3 is fitted with the half leather interior, standard to all 501 Evo 2 cars that rolled off the production line. Refurbished as part of the nut and bolt restoration it appears in nearly new condition, with no unsightly wear or sagging of the bolsters and the chequered inserts free from any unsightly stains or marks.
A well specified example it also comes with rare factory specified heated front seats, both of which are full functional. Just in front of the gear stick sits the special Evolution 2 numbered plaque, confirming the build number of the special edition vehicle.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Equipped with a later, more powerful version of BMW’s iconic S14 Engine (the S14B23) the EVO 2 produced nearly 30bhp more than the standard M3 and was the highest capacity 2.3L BMW used in the road going M3s and build for homologation purposes. By using an aluminium head BMW were able to keep weight down significantly improving the cars handling over its competitors.
As with all E30 M3’s the car has a 5 speed dog leg gearbox that feels tight and provides a quick change between 2nd and 3rd gear, the Evo 2 utilising the same ratios but a shorter final drive.
Mechanically speaking, this car is a superb with the underside as clean as the top. As well a full engine rebuild with invoices and photographs documenting the entire process the car also has its original service book showing 31 service stamps going back as far as 1988.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The car is fitted with the standard Evolution 2 16″ BBS cross spoke alloys, all of which are in perfect unmarked condition. They are shod in a nearly new set of Yokohama’s.
Brake discs are all in good order with no signs of lipping, as are the pads which still have plenty of miles left in them.
This M3 was supplied to its first German owner in June 1988 where it spent 2 years before being taken to Belgium by its next owner. It had 3 further owners in Belgium from 1990 to 2012 when it was imported to the UK to begin its second life and a full nut and bolt restoration.
The new UK owner spent the next 5 years completing an extensive nut and bolt restoration on the Evo 2, returning the car to as near to factory fresh as possible. The KMs at this time were 210k and the car was back on the road in full glory in 2017 as documented by the MOT certificates. It has now covered a further 9k km since the restoration.
The history file fully details the meticulous nature of each of the previous owners, with 31 stamps in the original BMW service book, invoices dating back to the 1980’s and a hand written breakdown of mileage and maintenance undertaken by each previous owner. Alongside the impressive history is a huge log of recent invoices, believed to total around £40k, to breakdown all the parts and services the car was subject to and additionally, a memory stick with a full photographic record of the engine rebuild.
Present with the car is the complete original book pack in its leather folder, Belgian COC, spare keys, tool kit and even a period correct fuel can.
In terms of provenience and attention to detail, this Evolution 2 is surly one of the best available today.
