Resplendent in signature Guards Red, this 968 looks every part the showroom star having been the subject of a total nut and bolt restoration by the Official Porsche Centre in Guildford. As part of an internal restoration competition between the official dealer network, this car was chosen to showcase the local dealer’s skill and expertise. Given the motivation to challenge (and beat) your peers, the team certainly delivered with this incredible machine; Winner of the Porsche GB Restoration Competition 2016.
The car presents flawlessly under our studio lights with a deep, consistent lustre throughout whilst all trims and lights have been inspected / replaced where appropriate.
Upon Strip and Inspection the car was found to only have some small areas of corrosion in the A Pillars, confirming an exceptional candidate for restoration going forward. The shell (comprising body, doors and sunroof) was bare stripped and sanded before a further corrosion / damage check was carried out. The shell was then etch and high build primed, supplemented by an intensive blocking / sanding process prior to cleaning, checking and masking for painting.
Now with a fresh coat of Guards Red (84 A) paint the car remained in controlled conditions for a week prior to polishing and return to the fitting shop.
Meanwhile, all the remaining components; bonnet, wings, sill mouldings, bumpers etc underwent the same process.
The interior space has also been revived with considerable dedication to factory fit and finish; seats, dash all other fittings were removed, inspected and cleaned prior to re installation. Door card fabrics and tops were re-glued and manipulated back into original position, whilst the handbrake and gear knob were re-trimmed alongside a thorough clean of boot tool and first aid kits. Headlining, carpets and mats show unmarked throughout whilst switch gear all works and presents as it should.
Being a Comfort specification this 968 retains a road bias with supportive cloth seats front and back, sunroof and providing a retro-modern look to the dash – an official Classic Nav system.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
As part of the exhaustive Restoration process the engine was removed for strip down and Inspection, where subsequently, a number of unserviceable parts were removed and replaced. Several days were also set aside for hand cleaning of the engine block with wet and dry paper / scouring pads!
Inlet and Exhaust manifolds were sent to for prep and paint whilst the engine was built back up with new crank bearings and piston rings. A new head gasket was also installed alongside new balance shafts, aux belts and a fresh timing belt.
Having covered nominal mileage since rebuild the car is naturally on the button and ready to be enjoyed.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 17 inch CUP 2 alloy wheels are in excellent condition with no marks or scuffs to be found. In accordance with the factory process, the wheels were acid dipped and shot blasted before undergoing a powder coating process in the original silver finish. Having been left for 8 weeks, for the paintwork to sink into natural blemishes, they were then flattened back before painting in both base and clear coats to achieve a perfect finish. New Pirelli P Zeros adorn all 4 corners – showing plenty of tread depth having covered minimal mileage since supply and fit by the OPC in 2016.
The Porsche calipers remain in excellent condition from strip and rebuild, with discs and pads displaying minimal wear.
Built in August of 1994, this 968 CS would initially be adopted by Porsche Stuttgart as a dealer demonstrator. The car would have it’s first two services with the supplying dealer prior to two further services with Porsche Centre Aachen before import into the UK in December of 1997. The car would then enjoy an excellent continuous history which is documented in chronological order across the original service book and 5 files of paperwork; simply the most comprehensive we have seen here. A well known car in PCGB owners circles, the car was earmarked for the dealer restoration competition having been enjoyed by a committed enthusiast (who had also been ably assisted by the aforementioned OPC in the past!)
Naturally, the considerable history file features prior to the quite incredible Restoration report from OPC Guildford. Two box files feature 6 chapters of Appendix relating to the restoration journey – documents and pictures of every step followed by online digital activity and coverage as well as Press and Print releases. Thankfully a more compact Case Study (just the 70 pages) highlights all the key steps from discovery of the car to feedback from presentations and open days.
There is also extensive marketing material of the car included in the two boxes of paperwork; posters, magazine articles and a dealer display placard to annotate the story.
Naturally the history is complimented by the original book pack, spare key and Certificate of Authenticity.
