Triumph TR4A IRS Surrey Hardtop

This is a Triumph TR4A. Why A? It marked the transition from the TR4 to the TR5. It was introduced in 1965 and produced for the two following years. Even though it doesn’t seem like it, a lot had changed from the TR4 to the TR4A. There might have been minor design changes on the outside but the enhanced chassis made the car wider. It was also equipped with the slightly tweaked engine from its predecessor. But most importantly it got a new rear suspension (IRS).Triumph was very proud of their IRS feature (Independent Rear Suspension). They even had a little IRS badge on the back of the car. This new suspension that was meant to provide better handling and comfort was well-received by the press and customers.
What are they like ? ..They’re fantastic! Equipped with a 2’138 cc inline-four that makes 104 bhp linked to a four-speed manual gearbox. That’s enough to take you from 0 to 60 in around 10 seconds with a top speed of 109 mph. These figures might not sound that impressive, but the TR4A still feels like a sporty car. They provides a lot of feedback, and the engine note is lovely. The 60’s really were such an amazing decade for British sports cars.
Our car offered here today, must be one of the nicest examples currently available. An original UK supplied car, finished in it’s original colour of Signal Red with Dark Red interior. Fitted with a factory optioned Surrey Hard top from new, factory overdrive, our car was destined for the Central African market (Rhodesia), as noted on the British Heritage Certificate. The car remained there, until it was purchased in 1979, by an English Doctor, who upon his return to the UK in 2011, brought the little Triumph back with him. His ambition to have the car restored was delayed due to a bout of ill health, & subsequently passed onto to a new keeper, who then undertook the major body off restoration.
The car remains a matching numbers example, & drives superbly today. Still retains all of its original features & is accompanied by a nice file of documents & receipts, along with a current UK V5C.
