THE DRIVE + ENGINE
The 996 Turbo debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999. Powered by a water-cooled Twin-KKK Turbo charged and intercooled 3.6-litre flat-6 engine derived from the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 race car. The engine is rated at 309 kW (420 PS; 415/420 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 415 lb?ft (563 N?m) of torque. As expected performance figures are impressive, even by today’s standards, with at top speed around 190 mph and the 0-62 mph dash dispatched in 4.2 secs. It features an all-wheel drive system for sure-footed security and confidence when powering out of corners and into sharp bend, or when road conditions are adverse. Our car offers the benefit of the more engaging 6-speed manual Getrag G96/00 transmission. It has revised styling and a wider stance than the naturally aspirated 996 Carrera models, along with new bi-xenon headlamps and a hydraulically operated rear wing. The Turbo also comes with Vario-Cam Plus and stability management. The bodywork was also revised to allow airflow to 3 radiators up front and to accommodate the 18-inch alloy wheels and tyres.
Other features introduced in 2002 were a glove box, center mounted cup-holders, an optional Bose stereo, plus rain-sensing wipers
The structure is 45% stiffer, yet lighter than previous 993. Weighing a relatively svelte 1317 kgs, even after accommodating the 4-wheel drive mechanicals, the 996 Turbo handles beautifully, poised and direct, with a chassis more than capable of taming the 415 bhp on tap. Our car starts on the first turn of the ignition keys and soon settles to an engaging burble. All gears can be selected with ease, braking via the ventilated and drilled discs all round is efficient and direct with no adverse pulling or drift to either side. During our Test Drive the Porsche performed admirably, as to be expected from such a low mileage, well maintained example.
Still representing, what must be, one of the greatest every day, usable Super-car bargains available on the market today. Strongly recommended before everyone catches-on, and prices subsequently rise.
