Penned by the legendary Tony Hatter, also responsible for the much coveted 993, and launched at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the 981 GT4 design, both purposeful and aggressive, was an instant success. Lowered ride height by 30mm, a large vented front bumper, to increase cooling for an additional radiator, lower front lip spoiler and large fixed rear wing, are all clues to the cars intent and ambitions. The large side air intake pods, which feed cooling air to the mid mounted engine, are branded with the GT4 logo. This particular Cayman was originally specified with the model deletion option from factory, so this has been removed from the rear elevation, which is dominated by the high rear wing, rear diffuser and large bore central twin exhausts.
Featuring the optional high back carbon bucket seats, which are electrically adjustable, with side airbags, these provide both driver and passenger with increased lateral support. The GT4 logo, stitched in a contrast Platinum Grey, features on both headrests. This theme extends to the Alcantara accents on the door grab handles and arm rests. Compact, three spoke, sports steering wheel, with Alcantara and bright chrome finish, emulated in the gear selector and gaiter. Gt4 logo also set into the aluminium sill guards. Carpets, headlining and door cards have been well protected, showing very little wear. L.E.D. courtesy lights, plus vanity mirrors in both sun visors. Twin cup holders are concealed within the facia, forward of the passenger, while 12v and Aux input sockets can be accessed via the glove-box. Ample stowage courtesy of the large boot space, rear parcel shelf and twin side storage panniers with sliding covers. During test, all electrical equipment and switches operated as intended.

THE DRIVE AND ENGINE
One of just 2500 units produced from 2015 – 2016, the mid engine, rear wheel drive GT4, benefitted from the attentions of the Porsche Motor Sport Division in Weissach. With a focus on weight reduction to achieve approx 1340kgs, and height by 30mm, brake and suspension components were sourced from the 911 GT3, the tuned 3.8 ltr engine, derived from the Carrera S, was then mid mounted. With direct fuel injection, 4 valves per cylinder, VVT and Vario-cam plus, the GT4’s, normally aspirated flat six, develops in the region of 385 bhp and 309 lb-ft of torque, around 283 bhp per ton. Mated to a slick, six speed manual transmission, with electromagnetic gearbox mounts, designed to assist driving dynamics. Performance figures suggest 0-60 mph can be achieved in 4.0/4.2 secs, and a top speed I.R.O. 183 mph. However, redlining at 7800 rpm, with L.S.D, its tuned and fettled chassis, brakes and aerodynamics, the GT4 is far more about the delivery and handling. The desire to produce the ultimate, mid-engine sports car, for road and track use, would seem to have been achieved, as Christian Gebhardt proved by completing the North Loop of the Nurburgring in 7 mins 4 secs. The ride, although firm, is still compliant enough over less perfect surfaces, while handling via the electronic power steering, remains nimble and precise. Hailed by T.G. magazine as “Jack of all trades, master of FUN!”, also muted as a potential future classic, this might be time to get involved?
